Richard Gasquet (ur. 18 czerwca 1986 w Beziers), tenisista francuski.
Ma za sobą bogatą karierę juniorską; sezon 2002 zakończył jako najlepszy junior na świecie, wygrał wielkoszlemowe turnieje French Open i US Open oraz był w półfinale Australian Open. W tym samym roku zaliczył debiut w gronie seniorów; wystąpił w French Open dzięki "dzikiej karcie" (przegrał w I rundzie z obrońcą tytułu Costą w czterech setach), stając się jednym z najmłodszych uczestników turnieju wielkoszlemowego w historii (najmłodszym od 1983). W 2003 był najmłodszym zawodnikiem w czołowej setce rankingu światowego, ale występował przede wszystkim w turniejach niższej rangi niż ATP Tour.
W 2004 zaliczył swój pierwszy finał w turnieju rangi ATP Tour; przegrał w Metz w decydującym meczu z rodakiem Jérôme Haehnelem. Osiągnął duży sukces w turnieju French Open - w parze z Tatianą Golovin wygrał konkurencję miksta. W 2005 dotarł do półfinału turnieju cyklu Masters Series w Monako (uległ Nadalowi) oraz finału w Hamburgu (przegrał z Federerem), a w czerwcu t.r. odniósł pierwsze zwycięstwo turniejowe - na kortach trawiastych w Nottingham.
W czerwcu 2006 obronił tytuł w Nottingham, a miesiąc później triumfował w szwajcarskim Gstaad, pokonując w finale Hiszpana Feliciano Lópeza.
W sierpniu 2006 osiągnął finał Turnieju ATP Masters Series w Toronto. W pojedynku o tytuł uległ Szwajcarowi Federerowi.
W październiku zdobył piąty tytuł singlowy, wygrywając w Lyonie.
Sezon 2007 zaczynał jako 18 zawodnik rankingu ATP. W lipcu tegoż roku osiągnął życiowy sukces dochodząc do półfinału na kortach Wimbledonu. Inne wyniki to m.in. zwycięstwo w Mumbaju i finał w Tokio. Zakwalifikował się po raz pierwszy w karierze do kończącego sezon turnieju Masters Cup.
Odpadł w fazie grupowej, odnosząc jedno zwycięstwo i dwie porażki. Zakończył sezon na 8 miejscu rankingu.

Jeden z moich ulubionych graczy i dlatego z bólem serca muszę przyznać, ze chyba największy "niespełniony" gracz w całych rozgrywkach. Wprawdzie jako jeden z nielicznych mimo młodego wieku wygrał turniej ATP na każdej z możliwych nawierzchni i był w top-10 niemniej po tenisiście z taką techniką i tak pięknym bh należy oczekiwać i z pewnością oczekuje się dużo więcej. Sezon 2008 miast przełomowym okazał się bardzo pechowym , a Rychu zdaje się stacza po równi pochylej.
Wierze, ze znajdzie właściwego trenera i zaufa właściwym ludziom, którzy tchną w Jego niewątpliwy talent przede wszystkim umiejętność wygrywania i trzymania koncentracji, bo te "syndromy samozadowolenia" które mu towarzyszą gdy wysoko prowadzi już wielokrotnie okazały się bardzo zgubne.
Dobry technik, cudowny backhand. Chyba najładniejszy i najszybszy w calym tourze. Pytanie tylko co z tego ? Skoro Rychu kolejny sezon gra ponizej swoich niebanalnych mozliwosci. Dobrze mowisz Dun, o tym ze Gasquetowi sprzydalby sie trener z prawdziwego zdarzenia. Potrafi rozgrywac dluzszy czas bardzo dobre zawody, by potem nagle sie zablokowac i juz nic nie zdzialac. Idealnym przykladem byl tu mecz z Tommym Hassem w tegorocznym US Open. Kiedy mu przestaje sie gra ukladac obraza sie na caly swiat i nie moze sie juz uspokoic do konca spotkania.
Trzymam kciuki za jego kariere, ale coraz bardziej obawiam sie ze "z tej mąki chleba nie będzie"

Tak to juz bywa gdy o mlodym czlowieku szybko sie zrobi glosno. Wygrane turnieje, final Mastersa, zbyt szybko sodowczka uderzyla do glowy. Pojawily sie na koncie naprawde duze pieniadze, zaczely sie imprezy, piekne dziewczyny, szybkie samochody, narkotyki... . Po bardzo dobrym sezonie 07, swietnej pogoni z 0:2 w meczu z Rodem 1/4 Wimbla i po pokonaniu Murraya w bezposrednim starciu o Masters Cup z Murrayem w Bercy, Ryś rokował nadzieje na naprawde wielka kariere, zwlaszcza ze technike zagran mial na poziomie prawdziwego mistrza.
Jezeli spelni sie najczarniejszy scenariusz, czyli dwuletnia dyskwalfikacja to moze byc jego koniec marzen o wielkich sukcesach. Gdyby jednak skonczylo sie tylko na 3 miesiecznej pauzie, sprzydaloby sie zeby zlapal go ktos za morde i poprowadzil dobrze jego kariere, bo jak widac sam ma za malo oleju w glowie by to zrobic.

Ja się zastanawiam, po czym to Gasquetowi miałoby odbić. :] Facet będzie miał 23 lata za miesiąc, a nie 18 powiedzmy i już nie jest chłopcem, ale powinien być odpowiedzilanym mężczyzną, a w porównaniu z tym, co w tym wieku osiągnęli Fed, Rod, Hewitt, Safin, Ferrero, czy nawet Nalb, a obecnie Rafa, Djoko i Murray, to wypada żałośnie wręcz.
Ja uważam, że jego ogólna postawa i wyniki, to chyba efekt cieplarnianych warunków, jakie Francuzom zapewnia ich federacja, oni najwyraźniej nie mają żadnej motywacji do samodoskonalenia, zero ambicji przejawiają ci ludzie. Monfils, Mathieu, Gasquet, co to oni mieli nie osiągnąć, a nic z tego z nich raczej już nie będzie. Tu musi być popełniany jakiś błąd wychowawczy w prowadzeniu tych graczy. New Balls byli chorobliwie ambitni, od samego początku chcieli rządzić w rozgrywkach, podobnie jak dziś trzej młodzi z Top 4. A tutaj wygląda na wielke zadowolanie z przeciętniactwa, widać musiało się Ryszardowi mocno nudzić, skoro sięgnął po takie coś.
Jużi nie mówiąć o tym, że kokaina to nie marihuana, że sobie z jakimiś kumplami zajarał, czy się z fajeczką zapoznał jak Phelps, co można jakoś tam zrozumieć, ale środek cokolwiek bardziej "zaawansowany", więc i kara zapewne będzie odpowiednia. :] Pół roku baniacji + piąchą po ryju, tak jak napisał Bizon, może coś do niego dotrze, bo jest na razie na najlepszej drodze do spaprania sobie już nie tylko kariery sportowej.

"Surowa" kara dla tenisisty za kokainę
Międzynarodowa Federacja Tenisowa zawiesiła na 60 dni francuskiego tenisistę Richarda Gasqueta, w którego organizmie test przeprowadzony w marcu podczas turnieju Masters 1000 ATP w Miami wykrył obecność kokainy.
Zawodnik będzie zawieszony do czasu przeprowadzenia badania próbki B.

"L'Equipe" na swojej stronie internetowej, a potwierdził ją sam zainteresowany. Według gazety, ślady kokainy znajdowały się w próbce moczu pobranego od tenisisty podczas marcowego turnieju w Miami, z którego Gasquet wycofał się w wyniku kontuzji barku.
22-letni tenisista zaprzeczył, że kiedykolwiek zażywał narkotyki i zapowiedział udowodnienie "swojej niewinności".
Francuz ma w dorobku pięć triumfów w imprezach rangi ATP Tour, a w Wielkim Szlemie najlepszym jego wynikiem był półfinał Wimbledonu w 2007 roku.

Gasquet free to return to Tour
France's Richard Gasquet is free to return to the ATP Tour after his ban for a positive cocaine test was reduced.
The world number 32 was provisionally suspended in May after a sample he had provided in March in Miami tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.
The International Tennis Federation said Gasquet's "inadvertent contamination" in a nightclub the night before his scheduled match meant a 12-month suspension would be disproportionate.
It has instead handed him a ban of two months and 15 days, which expired on Wednesday.

Z dwóch lat do dwóch i pół miesiąca władze antydopingowe skróciły dyskwalifikację Richarda Gasqueta za doping, bo dały wiarę, że kokaina dostała się do jego organizmu przez... pocałunki z tajemniczą Pamelą. Ale to nie koniec. Pamela skarży go o zniesławienie.
To chyba najbardziej kuriozalna historia dopingowa ostatnich lat.
Gasqueta, były numer siedem na świecie, którego talent porównywany był nawet do Rogera Federera, przyłapano na dopingu podczas marcowego turnieju w Miami. W jego organizmie wykryto kokainę. Sprawa wyszła na światło dzienne po artykułach "L'Equipe". 23-letni Francuz dostał w maju wstępny dwuletni zakaz gry w tenisa. Nie wystąpił ani we French Open, ani w Wimbledonie.
Odwołał się do niezależnego trybunału Międzynarodowej Federacji Tenisowej (ITF) w Londynie.
Według jego wersji, w dniu, w którym wiedział już, że wycofa się z turnieju w Miami przez kontuzję ramienia, wybrał się do restauracji ze swoim trenerem Guillaume'em Peyre'em i przyjacielem Thierrym Championem. Panowie pili alkohol i postanowili zaprzyjaźnić się z czterema atrakcyjnymi kobietami, które siedziały przy sąsiednim stoliku. Wśród nich była m.in. Francesca Antoniotti, prezenterka francuskiej telewizji. Towarzystwo po kolacji przeniosło się do nocnego klubu "Set" w centrum Miami. I właśnie tam Gasquet nawiązał jeszcze bliższą znajomość z jedną z kobiet - niejaką Pamelą. Owa bliższa przyjaźń - jak zapisano skwapliwie w protokołach ITF - przejawiła się m.in. "co najmniej siedmioma francuskimi pocałunkami, z których każdy trwał od pięciu do dziesięciu sekund". Po godz. 4.15 nad ranem zabawa przeniosła się do klubu ze striptizem Goldrush. Tam Pamela, według relacji Gasqueta, spędziła podejrzanie dużo czasu w toalecie, a potem na do widzenia dała mu kolejny długi pocałunek.
Gasquet wrócił do hotelu, poszedł spać, a rano stawił się na kortach, by oficjalnie wycofać się z turnieju. To właśnie wtedy pobrano od niego próbkę moczu, w której wykryto później śladowe ilości kokainy.
Werdykt trybunału odwoławczego, który zapadł w połowie lipca, wprawiał w osłupienie. "Dajemy wiarę wyjaśnieniom pana Gasqueta, że kokaina znalazła się w jego organizmie nieświadomie poprzez intymny kontakt z inną osobą". Tłumaczenie, że przyjął narkotyk z ust Pameli uznano za wiarygodne, bo chodziło o kilka miligramów. "Gdyby badanie przeprowadzono kilka godzin później, nie byłoby już śladu po narkotyku" - stwierdzili eksperci.
Gasquet został jedynie skrytykowany za to, że powinien lepiej dobierać sobie miejsca, gdzie spędza wolny czas. Oba kluby w Miami od dawna kojarzone są z narkotykami. Karę dwóch lat skrócono mu do dwóch i pół miesiąca. Oznacza to, że może zagrać już 9 sierpnia w Montrealu.
ITF (trybunał ITF to inne ciało, nie podlega federacji) i Międzynarodowa Agencja Antydopingowa (WADA) ostro zaprotestowały. Materiał dowodowy uznały za czystą spekulację. Przypadek Gasqueta może prowadzić teraz do niebezpiecznej furtki dla innych sportowców przyłapanych na zażywaniu kokainy lub marihuany. Winę zawsze można zwalić na pocałunki, słabą wentylację, pomylone kieliszki etc.
Wielu kibiców było jeszcze bardziej dosadnych. "Gasquet wywinął się tylko dzięki wsparciu potężnej francuskiej federacji, która naciskała na skrócenie kary" - napisał jeden z nich w internecie. W 2007 r. Martina Hingis też została przyłapana na obecności kokainy w organizmie. Ilość narkotyku też była śladowa, a Szwajcarka twierdziła, że jest niewinna. Kary nie cofnięto, choć Hingis nie zdecydowała się wtedy na odwołanie. Po prostu skończyła karierę.
Gasquet nie może się jednak jeszcze czuć bezpieczny, bo na scenę wkroczyła Pamela, która pozwała kilka dni temu tenisistę do sądu. Twierdzi, że została zniesławiona. "Nie biorę narkotyków i nie jestem żadną łatwą dziewczyną, która piszczy na widok gwiazdy tenisa" - napisała w oświadczeniu. Przyznała, że całowała się z Gasquetem, ale na pewno nie siedem razy i to Francuz miał inicjatywę. "Dawałam mu do zrozumienia, że nie jest w moim typie" - podkreśliła.
- Kokaina w pocałunku? Ludzie, to jest wariactwo! W normalnym sądzie takie dowody zostałyby wyśmiane - stwierdził Yassine Bouzrou, prawnik Pameli.
We francuskim sądzie prawnicy Gasqueta będą musieli wykazać, że Pamela brała narkotyki w klubie. Na razie nikt nie wie, co zrobi ITF, jeśli cywilny sąd przyzna rację kobiecie. Ale najbardziej prawdopodobna jest ugoda, czyli odszkodowanie dla Pameli i zielone światło do gry dla Gasqueta.

When the draw paired him against Rafael Nadal in the first round, one of the French writers said with an air of resignation: “Typical Gasquet. He is exactly where he does not want to be.”
No one has delighted less in coping with the demands of being named at 9 as a future world No 1 than the now 23-year-old Gasquet, who got to within seven places of fulfilling the prophecy two years ago and is No 46 in the rankings at present.
Murray empathises with his plight. The two are not particularly close — Gasquet has always been something of a loner — but seeing a fellow professional go through such a trial sits uncomfortably with the world No 2. And it underscores the need for vigilance when it comes to what you put into your mouth.
“You never know,” Murray, last year’s finalist, said. “Even when it comes to vitamin supplements you’ve just got to be careful. We don’t have any sort of body that sanctions vitamins or supplements for the players, which would help and make a big difference. To play five hours in the heat you can get here, you really should take something. I don’t think it’s healthy to endure that and not have a supplement that can help you recover.
“I can’t be more careful than I am now. I just don’t take anything because if something like that happened, it’s with you for the rest of your career. As far as Richard is concerned, he should be allowed to play here because, so far, he’s not been found guilty of anything. He doesn’t deserve to drop further down the rankings because of something accidental or which just didn’t happen.”
Gasquet against Nadal will receive as much attention for the Frenchman’s demeanour as the flexibility and strength in the Spaniard’s knees. No one can know for sure how they will stand up to the test. The hard courts are punishing in nature and the scheduling often mind-blowing.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -French tennis player Richard Gasquet will learn within a month if he has been banned after testing positive for cocaine.
Gasquet told the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday that he failed a drug test in March because he kissed a woman in a nightclub who contaminated him with cocaine.
He was suspended for 2 1/2 months, but the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation appealed to CAS to give him a doping ban of at least one year.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet will discover on Thursday afternoon if he will have to serve a longer ban after testing positive for cocaine.
An International Tennis Federation (ITF) panel cleared him two-and-a-half months into a 12-month ban in July.
It accepted the substance had got into his system after kissing a woman.
But the ITF and the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and are seeking a ban of up to two years.
The 23-year-old attended a CAS hearing in Switzerland last month and the court will reveal its verdict at 1630 GMT on Thursday.
Gasquet has previously said that the drug got into his system after he kissed the woman in a nightclub in Miami.
The tribunal supported his claim and felt that because "no more than a grain of salt" was recorded in the sample a long ban would have been an injustice.
Gasquet tested positive following a urine sample at the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida in March, after he withdrew from the tournament because of a shoulder injury.

GENEVA (AP) -French tennis player Richard Gasquet was cleared of any wrongdoing Thursday when the Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted his claim that he tested positive for cocaine by kissing a woman in a nightclub.
The CAS dismissed appeals by the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation, which wanted Gasquet banned for up to two years.
The court in Lausanne accepted Gasquet's claim that he inadvertently consumed cocaine by kissing the woman in a Miami club hours after withdrawing injured from a tournament in March.
``It was impossible for the player, even when exercising the utmost caution, to know that in kissing a woman who he had met in a totally unsuspicious environment, he could be contaminated with cocaine,'' the court said in a statement.
A CAS panel of three lawyers said the quantity of the drug in Gasquet's urine test was ``minute'' and the 23-year-old Frenchman was ``clearly not a regular cocaine user.''
``The possibility of contamination became the most plausible explanation,'' CAS said.
The verdict was greeted with dismay by WADA and the ITF, the sport's world governing body.
``WADA considered that the evidence warranted full and total scrutiny,'' director-general David Howman said in a statement. ``WADA abides by the CAS ruling and has no further comment at this stage.''
ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti said the federation was ``disappointed'' with the court's ruling.
``The ITF also recognizes the potential implications of the CAS decision with respect to future decisions and will discuss these with WADA,'' he said.
The 23-year-old Gasquet served a 2 1/2-month suspension before an independent ITF tribunal cleared him to resume his career in July.
It ruled he was not to blame because the woman - identified only as ``Pamela'' - contaminated him with cocaine hours before the drug test.
CAS said that ban should not count as a doping offense on Gasquet's record, even though he had not appealed against it.
Athletes who commit two doping offenses face a life ban from their sport.
WADA and the ITF appealed to CAS because they believed Gasquet should be held to the strictest standards of the WADA Code, which makes athletes responsible for any substance found in their body.
They tried to deny him the defense of ``no significant fault or negligence'' for the drug being present.
Gasquet gave evidence at the appeal, which was heard over seven hours at CAS headquarters on Nov. 10.
The CAS panel found he ``had not committed any fault or negligence within the meaning of the ITF anti-doping program.''
In his defense, Gasquet said he went to the nightclub with friends to see a French DJ perform after pulling out of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne with a shoulder injury. He met ``Pamela'' there and kissed her several times.
The court said both parties' experts ``agreed that the minute amount of cocaine could have been transferred in this manner.''
Gasquet can now prepare for the Australian Open in January. He missed the French Open and Wimbledon while suspended, and in his first main-draw match after returning lost in straight sets to top-seeded Rafael Nadal at the U.S. Open.
He is ranked No. 52 in the year-end ATP standings after being No. 23 when his failed test was announced in April.
Gasquet's ranking peaked at No. 7 in July 2007 after he reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, where he lost to Roger Federer. He has earned more than $4.2 million in career prize money, according to the ATP.

Gasquet Ends Title Drought In Nice, Wins Sixth Crown
Former World No. 7 Richard Gasquet has snapped a six-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents to capture his sixth ATP World Tour singles title.
The unseeded Frenchman, who is currently No. 68 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, defeated World No. 9 Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) in two hours and 38 minutes at the Open de Nice Cote d'Azur on Saturday.
"It was an incredible match," admitted Gasquet. "I didn't see myself coming back when I was in the third set. I saw myself really far from victory. I was a little tense while serving, which also happened to me in the second set.
"I couldn't have been more tired at the end and I really gave everything to the match. It is a title, my sixth, and it has been a long time since I won my last ATP World Tour title. I'll remember the match for the rest of my life, that's for sure. It was hard and it's a great victory against a great player."
Gasquet won 250 South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings points and earned €72,150 in prize money for lifting his first ATP World Tour title since 30 September 2007 at Mumbai. Verdasco picked up 150 points in his quest to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November and received a cheque for €37,900.
VerdascoGasquet converted his first break point opportunity in the sixth game, with second seed Verdasco serving at 30/40. He went on to take a 5-2 lead with a service hold to love.
In the eighth game, Verdasco recovered from 0/40 and saved four set points overall. Gasquet won 23 of 31 service points to clinch the first set in 43 minutes.
Verdasco took a 3-1 lead in the second set, but then lost four of the next five games. Serving for the match at 5-4, Gasquet dropped his serve to love.
Verdasco grew in confidence, levelling the scoreline at one-set apiece in a run of six straight games to a 3-0 lead in the third set. He came within one point of taking a 5-1 lead, but could not convert a break point opportunity on Gasquet’s serve.
Verdasco served for the match at 5-3, but was broken to 15. There were five breaks of serve in the third set, which was decided on a tie-break. Gasquet, who suffered from leg cramping in the third set, converted his first match point at 6-5 in the tie-break when Verdasco hit a forehand wide.
"I was close to losing and then I was so close to winning," said Verdasco. "I was 4-1 up and a few break points to be 5-1 [in the third set], but then he started hitting winners everywhere. Every break point was a good serve or a crazy forehand, every time a winner.
"I was not able to play in those circumstances. He got lucky in the 4-1 game and grew in confidence to break me and to come back. He started to play and run for everything again."
It snapped a five-match losing streak against Verdasco and was Gasquet’s first Top 10 win since beating compatriot and World No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome in May 2009. He now has a 12-35 lifetime record against Top 10 opponents.
GasquetEarlier this year, Gasquet reached the Medibank International Sydney final (l. to Baghdatis). Last week he captured his first ATP Challenger Tour title in over five years at Bordeaux (d. Llodra).
"After Bordeaux, I didn’t think about winning here," said Gasquet. "So I am very happy to have won and to have added a sixth title. Mostly, because it was a match of enormous intensity and being able to comeback was special."
The 23-year-old Swiss resident has an 18-11 match record on the season. He has been drawn to meet fourth seed Andy Murray of Great Britain in the Roland Garros first round.
Verdasco, 26, was attempting to join compatriot Rafael Nadal as a three-time ATP World Tour titlist this year. He has a 5-8 lifetime record in ATP World Tour finals, having won the SAP Open (d. Roddick) and Barcelona Open BancSabadell (d. Soderling) titles this year. He dropped to a 30-9 season record.
“It is always easier to play when people are supporting you," said Verdasco. "Of course, I think it helped him a lot. He was close to winning at 5-4 in the second set, but if he wasn’t playing in France, then it would have been difficult in the third set.
"I am happy because I played a final, but I am unhappy that I came so close to winning and couldn't do so."

Frenchman Richard Gasquet has ended his coaching collaboration with Argentine Gabriel Markus after little more than six months as the pair split at the US Open.
The split comes just before this weekend's Davis Cup as France host Argentina in Lyon.

During their coaching spell, Gasquet's ranking rose from outside the Top 50 into the Top 30. Gasquet is already shifting gears for the Davis semi-final, joining a squad which includes Monfils, Michael Llodra (who also split with a coach) and new father Gilles Simon.

RICHARD GASQUET: For sure I prefer to be 7 than 33, but it's very, very difficult. There are a lot of good players but I'm trying to go farther; I'm playing.
I need to win guys like Berdych next round to climb in the ranking. But, yeah, I will try to do my best to be higher in the ranking.
Q. When you see Berdych who is now 6, do you think, That should be me?
RICHARD GASQUET: I don't know. I really don't know. But I'm sure I can be better than 33.
Q. Is the journey now getting back to the top harder than getting there in the first place?
RICHARD GASQUET: I will see. I have a big match against Berdych. He's the favorite of the match. I will try to be my best and, yeah, to play better, to take confidence.

RICHARD GASQUET: Well, I think it's there are a lot very good players. Maybe it's harder, but I will try to come back the best I can.

Gasquet out of French Davis Cup side with shoulder injury
After a good run in Dubai, Richard Gasquet pulled out of his country's upcoming Davis Cup tie against Austria.
The clay court laid down in a spare aircraft hanger at Vienna airport will look particularly uninviting to the French Davis Cup squad this weekend after Richard Gasquet was added to the list of injury pullouts for the
visiting nation, a former champion in the worldwide team event.
The No. 33 withdrew with a right shoulder injury, leaving captain Guy Forget seriously pondering his remaining choices after earlier pullouts from Gale Monfils (wrist injury) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who announced this month that he is suffering with a hernia after missing months last season due to knees.
"Richard Gasquet must observe a period of rest and is thus forced to forfeit," read a French Federation statement.
Gasquet most recently played in the Dubai Championships, where he lost comprehensively to Roger Federer in a semi-final. Forget will now have to bring on board 51st-ranked Jeremy Chardy, a Dubai first-round singles loser who played the doubles final with Feliciano Lopez.
The remainder of the French team will likely consist of No. 33 Gilles Simon, 27th-ranked Michael Llodra and Julien Benneteau. Austria are fully fit, with No. 10 Jurgen Melzer leading a squad which also includes Stefan Koubek , Martin Fischer and Julian Knowle in doubles.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet is bidding to break back into the Top 10 of the South
African Airways ATP Rankings.
Richard Gasquet comes to Wimbledon, the site of his best Grand Slam performance, with the opportunity to return to the Top 10 for the first time since 2008.
It has been four years since Richard Gasquet reached, to date, his only Grand Slam championship semi-final at the All England Club. He has won seven ATP World Tour titles on clay, grass, hard and indoor surfaces – a rare feat.
For a player of great flair, classical elegance, imagination and natural talent, it is scant reward. But under the guidance of his former coach Eric Deblicker, and latterly Ivan Ljubicic’s long-time mentor, Riccardo Piatti, and a former fellow cap-wearing Frenchman, Sebastien Grosjean, this year, Gasquet is starting to edge closer to the Top 10 and maturing as a player at the age of 25.
“The French way is to play beautiful strokes, with style and to hit the ball early,” Gasquet told DEUCE at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. “I am a product of that philosophy, yet now I am learning to channel my emotions in order to play my best tennis on a regular basis.

“I have always played with a lot of feeling, but what I must do is stay relaxed and try to play without hesitation and not to be afraid to hit out on my shots. I am now focusing on staying calm on the court to play my best tennis.”By standing closer to the baseline and taking the ball earlier again, he is playing with more aggression and his confidence is soaring. “When I am able to take the ball early and hit a flat shot, it is better for me,” he admits. “If I am aggressive and come to the net, I grow in confidence.”
In the space of 12 months, Gasquet has risen from No. 48 to No. 13 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, just six spots shy of his career-high World No. 7 in July 2007. His results this season have matched his ranking spike. Victories over Andy Roddick, at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, and Tomas Berdych and Roger Federer in Rome, have given substance to the impression that Gasquet knows he can no longer rely on his natural talent if he is to fulfil his career objectives.
“I’m really pumped up and in good health,” he admits. “I am finding the right balance between offence and defence, and I realise I must wait for the right ball to attack. Riccardo and I always talk before matches that if I move forward, I can make it difficult for my opponents.”
There has also been a marked improvement in his conditioning and by refining his service motion he has added pop and spin. “My fitness has become one of my greatest strengths and that has helped my rise,” says Gasquet, “but to break the Top 5 not only requires superior conditioning but consistency, particularly at every Grand Slam tournament. Right now, Nadal, Djokovic, Federer and Murray are so consistent.
“My goal is to maintain my Top 20 ranking this year, but the goal between No. 6 and No. 20 is small, so there is scope to get into the Top 10. With Gael [Monfils] and Jo[-Wilfried Tsonga] improving their ranking, the healthy competition motivates each of us.”
In 2005, he won his first ATP World Tour title on the grass of Nottingham and famously saved three match points to beat Roger Federer 6-7(1), 6-2, 7-6(8) at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Two years later, he finished the season a career-best No. 8 and qualified for the year-end championships.

The results only seemed to vindicate French monthly Tennis Magazine putting a nine-year-old Gasquet on its front cover in February 1996. But he has always developed at his own pace. His parents, Francis and Maryse, had never pushed him. In recent years his form had been sporadic, his mental toughness had come under the microscope and younger rivals had risen to the upper echelons of the sport. But that never bothered Gasquet.
Former World No. 4 Grosjean, who maximised his talent to reach semi-finals at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, is in no doubt that when Gasquet does return to the Top 10 it won’t be fleeting. “He will be back in Top 10, because he can adapt on all courts. He has the game, of course, and now he really wants to stay at the top. He has a good attitude for the high level. He just needs to be more sure of himself. Little by little he is more positive and has a great attitude.”
Arnaud Clement insists, “He has improved a lot. He is more aggressive than the past couple of years, as he knows to get back into the Top 10 he has to do that.” Michael Llodra also recognises the fact that Gasquet will be a “big asset” for France in the future. “Last year he was on the Davis Cup team, but he didn’t play. As the third or fourth best Frenchman it is never easy. But we all know he has the talent to beat anyone and he will be a big asset once again.”
Having drawn a line over the past couple of years, Gasquet is entering the second chapter of his career with renewed vigour, which could spell trouble for his rivals that fear the return of his spellbinding game, his immaculately groomed single-handed backhand.

Q. You have reached the last 16. How do you feel your game is going?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I'm feeling good. I didn't lose a set, so I'm playing good. I played well today. It was a dangerous opponent; he won Wawrinka, so...
But at the start I had to play well to be confident. He fell down a little bit, and that was the key of the match. I wanted to be aggressive and to lead the game. I played two very good set, and after I felt a little bit pressure. But I finished the match with a good serve.
Q. Can I ask you, do you remember obviously your match with Murray here? What are your memories of that match three years ago?
RICHARD GASQUET: It was for me a good memory really, even if I lost. I played very well. I remember the crowd were very impressive. We told all the time, English, Wimbledon, it's quiet. But it was incredible. A lot people were cheering for him.
I remember the third and the fourth and the fifth set it was very difficult for me to play, because a lot guys were it was a lot of noise. I could finish in three set. I had a break 5 4 for me, but he fights a lot and I couldn't finish the match.
Q. You wanted them to stop because of the light.
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I remember.
Q. Do you think they should have stopped?
RICHARD GASQUET: It was hard to see. Hard to see. I were losing. He was very confident.
But as I said, the crowd help him a lot this day. I remember it was very noisy.
Q. How much harder do you think it is three years later? How much better is an Andy?
RICHARD GASQUET: He's better for sure, because when I played him he were maybe 12 in the world, maybe 12 or 13 in the world. So now he's 4, so he's much better.
But it was a good match for him, and after he won I remember one month later in Cincinnati, and he had the US Open. So he improve a lot in this period three years ago. Now he's much better than when I played him three years ago.
But if I have to play against him, I have for sure nothing to lose.
Q. Do matches like that have a psychological effect on players, or do you have to find a way of putting memories to one side?
RICHARD GASQUET: No, I always played well against him. I always won the first two sets in Roland Garros, so I hope not to win the first two sets this time. (Smiling.)
But, yeah, all the time. But he's fighting a lot. That's difficult, because he's putting all the balls in the court. He's very clever. He's one of the best player in the world.
Yeah, but both time I played him in Roland Garros and Wimbledon I was playing very well. Even if I lost, it was a good match, good matches for me.
Q. What part of his game has improved the most, do you think?
RICHARD GASQUET: Just he's playing faster than before. Before he played a little bit slow, and now he's playing very fast. He's aggressive. He's powerful. He has a big serve, big forehand. He's running everywhere.
He's also a very clever player. He knows how to win the points. No, he's one of the best player of the world for sure. He can win a Grand Slam soon.
Q. Did you speak after the matches in Roland Garros and back here? Was there any conversation?
RICHARD GASQUET: No, no, no, not so much. Yeah, I could win really. Two sets and 5 4, I could win the match, yeah.
But I hope to win two sets against him another time, but it's always tough to play because he's fighting a lot.
Q. As you say, there is a big help for a British player playing here, but there is also a lot pressure, isn't there? Can you understand that that pressure can be negative sometimes?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, but I think he used to. I think he did some semi-finals here, so now he's more mature. He's 24 years old, so for him it's now. He has to win this year, next year. That's the best time for him to play his best game in Wimbledon.
Q. You've run into both Nadal and Djokovic twice each this year. How would you evaluate them here on grass?
RICHARD GASQUET: Incredible even on grass. You know, Rafael won last year; Djokovic is playing unbelievable. So for sure that four players are the favourite. Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, and Federer, those are the big favourites of the tournaments.
But I think Nadal is one of the he's the favourite of the tournament for me more than the other one because he won last year and he won Roland Garros. But everybody can win, I think.
Q. You missed two years here. How much do you enjoy Wimbledon?
RICHARD GASQUET: I'm enjoying a lot. Yes, I missed two years here, so it's a lot. Last time I played it was against Murray in 2008. It's a long time.
So maybe if I have again to play against him, it's very good for me. I'm very happy.
Q. You're having a good year. Are you playing as well now as in 2008 or better?
RICHARD GASQUET: I'm playing good. Yeah, I'm 13 in the world, so I'm improving my level every week. I played well in Roland Garros. No, I'm playing good, I think. It's a good match for me. It's good for me to win second week, and I will try to go...
Q. You're happy on grass as well, aren't you?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I'm happy to be there. Happy to play again. I missed as I said two years Wimbledon, so I'm happy to be there. I'm happy to be there and I can play and I'm enjoying it. It's very nice to play here in Wimbledon.
Q. Do you still have ambitions of winning Grand Slams yourself?
RICHARD GASQUET: It's tough. It's tough, because when I was second week in Roland Garros I had to win Djokovic, then Federer, then Nadal. Even here in 2007 I won in semi-final I had to win the same: Federer and Nadal.
So even if I'm not far, you are far because you need to win the best after. So I don't know if I can, but I'll try to go farther as I can.
Q. About your foundation, what do you hope to achieve with that?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I need to do it again, because I had some problems two years ago. I had a lot of things to think. But I will try to do it again, because I stop a little bit. I will try to do something this year again.
Q. But the idea was to use sport to help...
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, in the south of France with the children, the poor children. No, for sure I have to do it again.

Q. Was the first set tiebreak the key to that match? Because last time I played him at Wimbledon it went five sets.
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it was very important. The first set we play almost one hour. I have some opportunities to win the first set, some break points, one break point at the start of the match.
But he served very well, especially in the second set. I tried to keep my serve, but he played well. You know, he's doing everything. He has great backhand, good forehand, he's running a lot, he's clever on the court also, so he's a good player.
Q. Is he a better player now than three years ago at this stage?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, for sure. He's 4 in the world now. Three years ago he were 15 or something.
So he's better, yeah.
Q. Did it make any difference to you that you were playing in front of Prince William and Princess Caroline, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? It's not every day that royalty shows up at Wimbledon.
RICHARD GASQUET: It's very nice for tennis and me to see them. It's a great. I will have a great memories from that for sure.
But after, it's tennis. I didn't lose because they came, no.
Q. It was not a distraction, it was a privilege more than a distraction?
RICHARD GASQUET: No, it's very nice for them to be there. For me, it's nice to see that. I will keep a lot of great memories from that for sure.
