In a rematch between the 2000 US Open finalists on opening night at the LA Tennis Open presented by Farmers Insurance, Russian Marat Safin once again got the better of American Pete Sampras, prevailing in the Match Tie-break 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 to win the “Millennium Challenge” exhibition match.

Despite the defeat, Sampras still managed to finish the night a winner, receiving his award as the 2009 LA Tennis Open Tournament Honoree following the exhibition. The two-time Los Angeles champion celebrated the honour on court with his parents, siblings, wife and children.

“I don’t play in LA too often, and even though I lived in Florida for a few years, when I was playing I always felt like my roots were here,” the 37-year-old Sampras said afterwards. “It’s nice to be back, nice to play in front of the LA fans. I wish I would’ve played a little bit better, but I don’t do this very often so I can’t expect miracles out there, but it was fun to play. The crowd was great, packed it in tonight, so it was a nice night.”

Safin had captured his first of two Grand Slam titles by defeating Sampras at Flushing Meadows, and reflected on the 2000 victory ahead of the exhibition match: “It's really a warm feeling [to] have an achievement like beating Sampras in the final of US Open. It was my first breakthrough actually, and it gave me the chance of becoming No. 1 in the world.”

Following his win over Sampras in the “Millennium Challenge”, the 29 year old teamed up with fellow Russian Igor Kunitsyn to defeat Marcos Baghdatis and Dudi Sela 6-7(6), 6-2, 11-9 in first-round doubles action. Safin and Kunitsyn fended off one match point in the decisive Tie-break to clinch the win in one hour and 39 minutes.

Safin is making his final appearance in Los Angeles, with plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2009 ATP World Tour season. The No. 8 seed in the singles draw, Safin will play his first-round match Tuesday evening against last week’s Indianapolis champion Robby Ginepri. The American leads the head-to-head series 2-0, but this will mark their first meeting since 2005.

Tennis fans will have the opportunity to relive one of the greatest moments in the history of the sport at Australian Open 2010.

Australian tennis legend Pat Rafter will be joined at the Australian Open legends event by Goran Ivanisevic for a “magic moments” re-match of their classic 2001 Wimbledon final.

“Even though losing that final to Goran was a big disappointment, it was still an amazing match to be part of and I will never forget that extraordinary atmosphere on centre court,” Pat Rafter said.

“I’m really looking forward to a re-match at the Australian Open in January, and hope I can turn the result around this time.”

As a three-time Wimbledon runner-up, Ivanisevic, then ranked a lowly world No.125 and two months off his thirtieth birthday, was granted a wildcard into the Wimbledon main draw by the All England Club.

He fought an injured shoulder and an unpredictable temperament to win over Carlos Moya, Andy Roddick, Greg Rusedski, Marat Safin and Tim Henman and progressed to a final delayed until the Monday due to rain.

Thousands of Australians and Croatians queued for hours for the 10,000 tickets usually not available to the average tennis fan, creating a raucous centre court atmosphere unlike anything Wimbledon had ever experienced before.

The historic five-setter, with Ivanisevic prevailing over the much favoured Pat Rafter, is remembered as one of the best tennis matches ever.

Rafter, who reached the final the year before, losing out to Pete Sampras, said at the time, “I don’t know if Wimbledon has seen anything like it. I don’t know [if] they will again. This is what we play for. This is what it’s all about.”

Rafter and Ivanisevic will relive that magic tennis moment in a specially scheduled marquee match at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday 28 January (schedule to be confirmed).

Joining Rafter and Ivanisevic for the Australian Open legends tournament will be Pat Cash, Mats Wilander, Guy Forget, Henri Leconte, Mansour Bahrami and the Woodies – Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.

Tournament Director Todd Woodbridge said today, “I’m thrilled to have Pat Rafter and Goran Ivanisevic headlining the Australian Open legends event for 2010. Their 2001 Wimbledon final was unforgettable, and it will be fantastic to see them replay it here at Melbourne Park.

“We have a very strong line-up of players, and with matches starting a day earlier, on the middle Saturday next year, tennis fans will have even more opportunity to watch the guys in action. They are always highly entertaining and their skills are still impressive.”

The Australian Open 2010 legends event commences on Saturday 23 January, with matches expected to take place at Margaret Court Arena and Show Courts 2 and 3 from 10:00 am each morning. Schedules will be confirmed daily during the tournament.

Series tickets for Australian Open 2010 go on sale through Ticketek from 9:00 am on Wednesday 7 October to 5:00 pm Sunday 11 October (AEDST).

Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena single session tickets and Australian Open ground passes are on sale from 9:00 am (AEDST) Monday 12 October.

1) Seul Federer-Sampras
   Roger Federer wygrał z Petem Samprasem 6:4, 6:3 w pokazowym meczu, który rozegrano we wtorek w Seulu. Było to pierwsze spotkanie gigantów tenisa od 2001 r.
Aktualny lider światowego rankingu miał przewagę od początku meczu. Bardziej wyrównany był pierwszy set, w drugim Szwajcar dość łatwo wygrał cztery z pięciu pierwszych gemów i kontrolował sytuację. Tak jak można było się spodziewać 36-letni Sampras świetnie serwował i często chodził do siatki, ale po pewnym czasie było po nim widać lekkie zmęczenie.
- Czułem się dziwnie grając z Petem, ale nie mogłem mu dać żadnej taryfy ulgowej. Zagrałem na wysokim poziomie, ale Pete też wciąż jest niezłej w formie, a przecież przestał grać już kilka lat temu - powiedział po meczu Federer, który w przeciwieństwie do Amerykanina ma za sobą pełny sezon startów - zakończony w niedzielę triumfem w Masters Cup w Szanghaju.

   Lider światowych rankingów tenisowych, Szwajcar Roger Federer przegrał w sobotę w Makau, w ostatnim z trzech spotkań pokazowych z byłym liderem rankingu ATP, Amerykaninem Petem Samprasem 6:7 (6:8), 4:6.

Sampras beats Agassi in Macau exhibition

MACAU — Pete Sampras edged by Andre Agassi in three sets on Sunday as the two retired American tennis greats revisited one of the sport's greatest rivalries.

The 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win in this southern Chinese gambling enclave was the first time the two had played since Sampras won in the 2002 U.S. Open final for his then-record 14th Grand Slam.

The fast indoor surface at The Venetian Macao arena favored Sampras' attacking style, but it was Agassi who came out packing more heat in his serve, showing no signs of the bad back that required four injections during his final tournament, the 2006 U.S. Open. But Sampras, who beat Roger Federer at the same venue in an exhibition two years ago, recovered, serving an ace and using a delicate pickup volley to secure the second set.

He continued his strong form into the super tiebreaker, overwhelming Agassi with his powerful serve. Trailing 9-6, Agassi saved two match points — the second with a down-the-line backhand winner — but Sampras served out the match with another ace.

"Thanks for the exercise," Agassi told Sampras after the match.

The two Americans captivated fans in the 1990s and early 2000s with their contrasting styles and personalities. The reserved Sampras was known for his serve and crafty volleys; the long-haired, neon-wearing Agassi wore down opponents with accurate returns and counter-punching.

Sampras led their head-to-head 20 to 14, including 4 to 1 in Grand Slam finals, the last being Sampras' four-set victory in the 2002 U.S. Open final.

The two former No. 1s have 124 career titles and 22 Grand Slams between them — Agassi has eight and Sampras 14. Agassi is one of only six men to have won all four majors and also won Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996. Sampras' 14 Slams was a record until Federer won Wimbledon this year, bringing the Swiss star's tally to 15.

MANILA – Former French Open Champion Michael Chang of the United States and Filipino-American tennis ace Cecil Mamiit faced off in an exhibition game that aimed to raise funds for typhoon victims in the Philippines.

Mamiit, his tennis friends and other Fil-Am volunteers were able to generate more than $9,000 or over P400,000.

The Fil-Am Davis Cupper held the tennis fundraiser in Orange County, California before he left for Manila to prepare for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games. He won the SEA Games singles gold medal in 2005.

He said he will give the whole amount to typhoon victims through ABS-CBN’s Sagip Kapamilya.

Chang, for his part, told ABS-CBN News: “I think it's great that Cecil felt that ‘Hey, I'm in a position where could do something about this’ and with the help of different people.”

“To be able to put together an event like this in such a short period of time is not an easy thing to do,” added Chang, who holds the record of being the youngest player to win a grand slam. He bagged the French Open in 1989 as a 17-year-old.

Outpouring of support

Mamiit said he was greatly affected by the news of the devastation caused by typhoons, including “Ondoy” (international code name Ketsana) and “Pepeng” (Parma).

“I'm going back. I would give all the proceeds, everything. I felt bad because when I went back to LA, the typhoons hit,” he shared. “So I haven't been back so I wanted to bring the community together here, all the Fil-Ams... and bring all out all the best - my friends - out here. I'm so glad that they came out to support me.”

"This has been a great event and I'm happy that everybody came out and supported everything,” he stated.

He even personally appealed to members in various Fil-Am tennis clubs in Southern California before the fundraiser.

More charity events

Aside from the Chang vs Mamiit exhibition game, Fil-Am tennis fans were treated to autograph sessions with their idols and other activities.

“This is the easiest way to raise funds and help the people and the victims back home,” said event co-organizer Cherry Carluen.

Mamiit said he was overjoyed with the outpouring of support that is why he is planning to organize other charity events for those in need in the Philippines.

Oglądałem mecz Baghdatisa z Gonzalezem. Trwał godzinę, nie był to normalny mecz jak na pokazówkę, mało było gry na małe pole, nie było tak typowych dla pokazówek zagrań jak loby, skróty czy hot-dogi. Obaj nastawili sie na grę z linii końcowej. Marcos zwycięstwo zawdzięcza słabej grze rywala, Gonzalez psuł ile wlezie z fh, słabo funkcjonował mu serwis i bez tych atutów był bezradny. Gonzo przegrywając stracił szansę na SF, Cypryjczyk jutro zagra z Monaco o awans

Federer, Nadal Kick Off 2010 ATP World Tour In Doha

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal today played a unique game of tennis on a magic carpet in the Souq Waqif in Doha. The two best tennis players in the world, who have arrived in Doha for one of the first three events of the year, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, entertained the fans in the first ever match on a magic carpet, a timeless literary and legendary feature; the other two ATP World Tour events of the first week of 2010 are the Aircel Chennai Open (India) and the Brisbane International (Australia).

Federer, World No. 1 and reigning ATP World Tour Champion said: “2009 was a memorable year for me on and off the court. Pomimo ze to pokazówka to wynik pierwszego meczu zaskakujący.Widać ze z formą Bernie nie jest

To dobra prognoza przed Melbourne,może Bernie przejdzie jedną albo z dwie rundy...
Co do Simona to gra coraz to gorzej, aż trudno uwierzyć ze to była niedawno siódma rakieta świata.Taki przeciętniak Ginepri teraz robi z nim co chcę na korcie .Z taką dyspozycją Simon niestety nie ma czego szukać w Szlemie...

Wygląda na to, że Simon zrezygnuje z AO, ma jakąś kontuzję i turniej w Adelajdzie miał dać mu odp na to w jakiej jest w formie, jak widać po wynikach jest w słabej, więc bardzo możliwe, że Gillou wycofa się z AO

The Caesars Tennis Classic  will be hosted by two-time US Open and five-time Wimbledon Champion Venus Williams.  The Classic will feature three matches in a team format.  The first  match will feature 1985, 1986 and 1987 US Open Champion Ivan Lendl going up against former nemesis and 1988 US Open Champion Mats Wilander.  Lendl and Wilander, who together have won a combined 15 Grand Slam singles titles, have met in the finals of the US Open, French Open, Australian Open and the Masters a combined six times.  The second marquis match-up will showcase 2003 US Open Champion and current top-ranked US men’s tennis player Andy Roddick against 2000 US Open Champion Marat Safin.  A third match, to be announced in the coming weeks, will round out the Caesars Tennis Classic teams with two more world champion talents that add yet another dynamic to this must see event.

Harrah’s Entertainm ent/Caesars has been supporting world class tennis events since 1972.  One of the best stops on the Men’s Profession al Tennis tour, the “Alan King Classic,” which was played at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, hosted the like of Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl and Arthur Ashe.  Through the 80’s and 90’s, Harrah’s continued to support world class tennis, bringing unique events to the Mid-Atlantic region most specifical ly the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.  The historic venue has hosted champions such as Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Navratilov a, Vitas Gerulaitis, Bobby Riggs, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Pam Shriver.

Andy Murray to face Lleyton Hewitt in exhibition match

Andy Murray is to play Lleyton Hewitt in an exhibition match this week as part of his Wimbledon preparation.

Murray, 23, has been hampered by a knee injury and was beaten by Mardy Fish in the third round at Queen's.

The Scot admitted he needed more grass- court action and will play former Wimbledon champion Hewitt at London's Hurlingham club on Thursday.

Murray's mother, Judy, said: "Andy will build more competitive match practice into his preparation from Thursday."

Murray, who was born with a split patella, had his right knee heavily strapped at Queen's, but Judy played down fitness concerns ahead of Wimbledon, which gets under way on Monday.

She said: "Andy's knee is something he was born with, so he has always had to deal with it. A change of surfaces inflames it a bit but he has a physio working with him full-time so it's very carefully looked after.

"He would have liked to have played a couple more matches last week (at Queen's) but he has a couple of exhibition matches lined up this week and is playing Hewitt on Thursday."

The Australian, who won Wimbledon in 2002, goes into the match on the back of a fine victory over Roger Federer in the final of the Gerry Weber Open.

It was Federer's first defeat on the grass courts of Halle in 29 matches and ended Hewitt's dismal run of 15 straight defeats to the reigning Wimbledon champion.

Murray, the world number four, reached the semi-finals at the All England Club last year, losing to Andy Roddick, and was beaten by Roger Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open.

But his form since then has been patchy, losing in the fourth round of the French Open, before his surprise defeat by Fish at Queen's, which ended his reign as champion.

Sampras-Agassi Tennis Exhibition Replaces Women’s Event for Madison Square Garden

The tennis exhibition competition at New York’s Madison Square Garden known as the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup in 2009 and 2010 starring Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic will be replaced next year by a featured match between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. A one-set match between John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl will precede the 2011 BNP Paribas Showdown is scheduled for Monday, February 28, 2011.

Sampras to venture to China in first competitive outing

Eight years after his ATP retirment Pete Sampras will finally get onto a tennis court in China as the former great headlines an eight-man special event in Chengdu Open set for late October.

The exho in the major city in southwest Sichuan province will be former contemporaries Pat Rafter, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Michael Stich at the ATP Champions Tour event.

The metropolis enjoys world fame as home of the country's giant pandas. The October 21-24 event is a repeat of a similar exercise staged a year ago as the senior tour expands its marketplace to the East as the ATP did more than a decade ago.

One-time Asian ace Paradorn Srichaphan, about to hang up his racket three years after his ATP match, is also in the field, drawn into the Sampras field along with 1987 Wimbledon Champion Pat Cash ands French Davis Cup captain Guy Forget.

Included in Rafter's rival group are Chengdu champion Thomas Enqvist, 1991 Wimbledon winner Michael Stich and Russian Kafelnikov, a former No. 1. Between them, the eight-man field hold 150 ATP World Tour singles titles and 62 in doubles.

“I had a fantastic time there last year and I’m looking forward to playing Pete again," said Enqvist, adding that he will be sure to take a look at the pandas on his second visit to the city.

…zagrają w Warszawie Bjoern Borg i John McEnroe. Dokładniej: w pierwszej połowie grudnia, a jeszcze dokładniej: 11 grudnia w sobotę, choć nie mamy pewności, czy istotnie po południu. Spotkanie starszych panów zaplanowano na Torwarze. Tuż obok kortów Legii, na których młody Borg wystąpił w 1975 roku podczas meczu o Puchar Davisa. Był już wówczas gwiazdą, więc wydarzenie to było nie lada - tak zapamiętał je Wojciech Fibak: „W dniu, w którym grałem przeciwko Borgowi była mżawka i miałem prawo nie wyjść do gry. A on miał zaraz lecieć na zawodowy turniej do amerykańskiego Dallas. Gdybym nie zgodził się na rozegranie meczu tamtego dnia, wygrałbym walkowerem, bo Borg i tak by poleciał. Jednak znając i szanując Szweda, który na początku mojej kariery bardzo mi pomógł, także finansowo, zdecydowałem, że zagramy. Borg mnie pokonał, a Szwedzi wygrali cały mecz 4:1”. Wygląda więc na to, że Bjoern mile nas wspomina. A John? Ten  jeszcze nie był w Polsce, z tym większym niepokojem czekamy na pierwszą wizytę. Co, jeśli mu się nie spodoba? Że kort nierówny, że sędziowie niedowidzą, że na trybunach ktoś rozmawia? Skądinąd wiemy, że Amerykanin wciąż lubi sobie pokrzyczeć podczas gry. Wiadomo również, że mimo 51 lat na karku jest w znakomitej formie. Liczymy zatem na cięte bekhendy i – wybaczymy – parę ciętych ripost. Obaj znają się świetnie z dawnych (oficjalny bilans 7:7) i całkiem niedawnych pojedynków na korcie, ale także z planu reklamówki Tesco (!), w której ścigają się do sklepowych kas – zdjęcie poniżej. Mamy nadzieję, że zgodnie z „filozofią” owych supermarketów bilety na mecz nie będą drogie.

Ciekawe, czy to prawda.

Wczoraj na korcie pod szklaną kopułą warszawskich Złotych Tarasów odbyła się impreza z udziałem Klaudii Jans, Alicji Rosolskiej, Mariusza Fyrstenberga i Marcina Matkowskiego.

Na początku doszło do dwóch pojedynków mikstów. Nie zabrakło tez pojedynku Matki z Frytką. Zwyciężył Marcin 10:8, choć wynik nie był tym razem najważniejszy.

Z eksportowymi deblistami mogli zagrać także kibice. Czterech śmiałków, którzy zdołali wygrać punkt z tenisistami, otrzymało rakiety Babolata.

Fani tenisa mogli zrobić sobie zdjęcia z idola i zdobyć ich autografy. Fotograf robił zdjęcia kibicom z Mariuszem Fyrstenbergiem, Marcinem Matkowskim oraz Klaudią Jans i Alicją Rosolską.

Fotki zostaną wywołane i podpisane przez tenisistów i tenisistki. Kibice będą mogli przyjechać po nie w kolejnym tygodniu i odebrać za darmo w Złotych Tarasach.

Nadal z Federerem zagrają na cele charytatywne

Dwóch najlepszych obecnie tenisistów świata - Hiszpan Rafael Nadal i Szwajcar Roger Federer - tylko raz spotkało się w tym roku na korcie. Do dwóch kolejnych meczów, z których dochód zostanie przeznaczony na cele charytatywne, dojdzie przed Bożym Narodzeniem.Nadal i Federer zmierzyli się do tej pory 21 razy, ale w tym roku tylko na korcie ziemnym w Madrycie (lepszy był Hiszpan).

21 grudnia zagrają w Zurychu, a dochód zostanie przeznaczony na głodujących w Afryce. Do rewanżu dojdzie dzień później w Hiszpanii, a środki zasilą fundację Nadala, która pomaga dzieciom, m.in. w Indiach.

Lendl pokonał Borga

Jeden z najlepszych tenisistów lat 80-tych ubiegłego wieku Ivan Lendl nadal prezentuje znakomitą formę. W pokazowym meczu, po 16 latach przerwy, pokonał w rodzinnej Ostrawie równie utytułowanego Szweda Bjoerna Borga.W pokazowym turnieju w Ostrawie 50-letni Lendl, od 1992 obywatel USA, zwyciężył młodszego o cztery lata Borga 6:4, 7:6 (7-3). W innym meczu
rodak Borga Mats Wilander wygrał 6:3 z Czechem Karelem Novackiem. Novackowi nie udał się rewanż za ubiegłoroczną porażkę z Wilanderem w turnieju w Pradze.

W Ostrawie miał wystąpić także Słowak Miloslav Mecir, ale na przeszkodzie stanęła kontuzja kolana. Wcześniej tenisiści odwiedzili z prezentami
małych pacjentów jednego z miejscowych szpitali.

Urodzony w Ostrawie Lendl zakończył karierę w 1994 roku. Ostatni mecz rozegrał 1 września 1994 roku w drugiej rundzie turnieju wielkoszlemowego US Open z Niemcem Berndem Karbacherem, kreczując w trzecim secie z powodu bólu
pleców. Triumfował w US Open w latach
(1985-1987), na kortach Rolanda Garrosa (1984, 1986-1987) oraz w Australian Open (1989-1990). Nigdy nie udało mu się wygrał na wimbledońskiej trawie, gdzie
dwa razy dotarł do finału (1986-1987). Wygrał w sumie 94 turniejów.

Borg ma w dorobku o 31 wygranych turniejów mniej od Lendla. Sześć razy triumfował w Paryżu i pięć razy z rzędu w Londynie, czterokrotnie był finalistą US Open. W 1983 roku zakończył karierę, a próby powrotu zakończyły się fiaskiem.

Nadal and Federer to face off

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will interrupt their brief off-season to face off in two exhibition matches before Christmas in Zurich and Madrid.

The world's two best players, both in London to compete in the ATP World Tour finals, will play in Zurich's Hellenstadion on December 21 before flying to the Spanish capital to play the following day at La Caja Magica.

Proceeds from the best-of-three-sets matches will go to the players' charities.

"I always enjoy playing Rafa on the big stages and it is especially exciting when we can do it to help raise monies for our foundations," 16-times Grand Slam champion Federer said.

The announcement of the exhibition matches comes as the ATP prepare for a series of board meetings in London in which they are expected to shorten the men's calendar - a move favoured by both Nadal and Federer.

World number one Nadal, who boasts a 14-7 record over Federer in competitive mathces, has only just returned from a shoulder injury which prevented him playing at the Paris Masters.

"It's their right to play these matches, especially as they're doing it for charity," ATP chief Adam Helfant said when asked if he agreed with players taking part in exhibition matches during the off-season.

However, the ATP could bring in rules regarding exhibition matches if they agree a two- or three-week lengthening of the off-season.

"We are not looking to change the exhibitions or special event rules across the whole calendar, but I'm talking about this potential mandated period of rest across two or three weeks," Helfant said.

Murray A Hit At Mark Knowles' Charity Exhibition

The 10th edition of Mark Knowles’ Celebrity Tennis Invitational received a boost from World No. 4 Andy Murray, who made the transatlantic journey to The Bahamas on Saturday to join other ATP and WTA players at the charity exhibition.

"It’s a tremendous event," former doubles No. 1 Knowles told The Bahamas Weekly of Murray’s appearance. "You don’t get to see these kinds of players very often and to have them here in The Bahamas is very special."

Shortly after his arrival in Nassau, Murray teamed up with Knowles at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre in doubles action against Oliver Marach and Bobby Reynolds, and then played Xavier Malisse in singles.

"I know he's put a huge amount of work into it over the years, so I'm just pleased that I can help out," said Murray in The Bahamas Weekly.

The event raised $150,000 for local charities, bringing the 10 year total for the Mark Knowles’ Celebrity Tennis Invitational to more than $700,000.

To już ósma edycja tej imprezy. W poprzednich latach triumfowali David Nalbandian (trzykrotnie), Guillermo Canas (dwukrotnie), Juan Monaco oraz Gaston Gaudio.

Zawody rozgrywane są na twardych kortach Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. Pula nagród to 250 tys. dolarów.

The clash between No. 1 Nadal and the second-ranked Federer kicks off Tuesday in Zurich's Hallenstadion to benefit the Roger Federer Foundation, which works mainly in his mother's native South Africa. A day later, the action shifts to Madrid's Caja Magica in honour of the Fundacion Rafael Nadal.

Nadal has been hyping the event in a Spanish radio interview. "Both in Spain and Switzerland people have turned to the charity match," he told Onda Cera. It's a nice project (which) Roger and I look forward to, I'm proud to help."

Nadal said that his mother has been working for weeks on the Madrid side of the series, adding that charity work is an important part of his off-tennis life. "I have my mother and my team working on the Foundation, this will be an important part of my future. I have a special fondness for children, we
focus a lot on them, are the main thing. The more income we have, the more we can help."

Federer, who ended the 2010 season with a victory over his rival to win the year-end title in London, had a brief holiday in the Seychelles, where his presence brought out the island's tourism minister for a photo op. Nadal was recently honoured by his hometown of Manacor on the island of Mallorca, where he's lived his entire life.

Mecz taki sobie. Oczywiście 2 duże pomyłki "komentatorów", naprawdę Rafa nie umię ukrywać swoich zamiarów :P. Może jutro w Madrycie będzie to lepiej ukryte. Widać Rafa już testuje butki na nowy sezon.

Bez rewelki, spodziewałem się trochę magii, ale nie ujrzeliśmy jej dzisiaj. Granie przez środek kortu też jakoś nie wywołało u mnie pozytywnych odczuć.

Federer, Nadal hope to repeat charity success in Madrid



Roger Federer can only hope that his Madrid exhibition match with Rafael Nadal produces as much success as did the pair's meeting in Zurich, where more than $2.5 million was raised for the Roger Federer foundation.

The Madrid meeting will benefit the personal charity foundation of Spain's Nadal, which works with underprivileged children. The philanthropic one-two was a joint idea from the top two players in the world, who also played in goodwill exhos this season at the Australian Open for the Haiti earthquake
and at Indian Wells in March.

Federer and Nadal, plus their various handlers and agents are donating all proceeds to the two charities,with no professional fees involved. Tickets for both matches sold out (around 10,000 each) within minutes of going online.

"Both of us realise we are in a very privileged position, where we have everything in life, the least we can do is to help people who are in difficulty," said Nadal after "losing" 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to his friendly rival
in snowy Zurich.

Before the match, Federer had been looking to raise around $1 million, a target which was easily surpassed. "When you can help 1,500 children to go to school, it's great but you need a lot around it: how do the children get to school, what do they eat at school, do they have toilets... and that's where we come in," Federer told Swiss televison.

Federer and Nadal last played on the ATP barely three weeks ago, with the Swiss winning their final at the season-ending ATP event in London. The pair are due to play the Emirates Challenge Cup exho in Abu Dhabi over the New Year weekend.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal competed in the first of two charity exhibitions Tuesday night in Zurich, the ‘Match For Africa’ to benefit the Roger Federer Foundation, won by the Swiss 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“This is a special match for me, which I’ll remember forever, not just only for a long, long time,” Federer said afterward. “I thought obviously of doing a match like this for a long time, but I felt comfortable doing it this year and Rafa was so supportive and coming over and helping… I’ll look back on this with very fond memories forever and that I was able to pull off this event here in Switzerland for the first time so nicely and with such hype, it was just amazing.”

The ATP World Tour’s top two players put on a competitive show at Hallenstadion Arena, which had sold out in a record two minutes, in their first meeting since last month’s title match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Nadal, who had lost to Federer at the circuit finale, capitalised on double break point in the ninth game before serving out the opening set at love.

Federer had joked in a promotional video after Nadal accepted his invitation to play in Switzerland, “As a present, I’ll give you the first set,” but responded when asked whether it was a Christmas present, “It looks like it, but it wasn’t. It’s really difficult to play today. We haven’t had any practice on this court – they build it up, tear it down – but it was for a great cause. I’m so happy Rafa came here today. We tried our best to put in a good effort and I thought the crowds were amazing.”

Federer quickly turned the tide by rolling out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, allowing him to draw level at one-set all, and served his way out of trouble in the third with aces on Nadal’s two break chances. He won the final four games of the match, closing out the victory with a winner on return of serve.

“The atmosphere is quite different; it’s not a tournament really, it’s just one particular match, which honestly I’m not quite used to doing,” said Federer. “The focus is just solely on two players and one match. There was quite a pressure going into a match like this, but at the end of the day, it’s so not important who won the match tonight. It was a match for Africa, this money is going to go to a good cause, for my Foundation, for kids in Africa, so I’m so proud and so happy that we all made it work, so thanks again to everybody.”

Nadal, who joked that he liked Federer “a little bit less,” after two straight losses, echoed many of the Swiss’ sentiments. “It wasn’t an easy match with new conditions, no days of preparation… The important thing is what he said is the money for the Foundation, for very good causes, for the kids, for the people that really need help, so I’m very happy to be part of this event. Thank you to Roger who invited me here. It was an unforgettable experience. “

The pair will make the quick trip to Spain for the “Joining Forces for the Benefit of Children” exhibition Wednesday night at the Caja Magica, home of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, with proceeds from the evening to benefit the Rafa Nadal Foundation. The match will be streamed live online and will also be broadcast internationally.

Though Nadal anticipates a similar atmosphere to Tuesday’s exhibition, he added about playing in front of his home country fans, “It’ll be very exciting for me, and very emotional for me also. Thanks to Roger for coming tomorrow. We never played together in Switzerland before, but in Madrid it’s going to be the third time I think. We’re going to be 1-1, he beat me in 2009, I beat him in 2010, so it’s going to be a decisive moment.”

Federer defeats Nadal in first exhibition match

ZURICH (AP)—Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 Tuesday to open a two-match exhibition series for charity between the world’s top ranked tennis players.

Federer sealed victory on Nadal’s serve with a backhand crosscourt return in front of 10,000 fans at sold-out Hallenstadion indoor arena. This was the first time they have played each other in Federer’s home country.

The match in Switzerland raised money for Federer’s foundation, which backs educational work with children in Africa. It currently supports projects in Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and his mother’s native South Africa.

“This is a special match for me, which I will remember forever,” Federer said. “I’m just so proud and so happy that we all made it work.”

The rivals will be in Madrid on Wednesday for a return match in the top-ranked Nadal’s home country in support of his foundation.

“It was an unforgettable experience. I’m very happy to be part of this event,” Nadal said.

The good-natured match was the showpiece of a telethon-like event broadcast live by Swiss television. Swiss sports stars, including Olympic champion cyclist Fabian Cancellara and Alpine skier Didier Cuche, helped auction prizes they donated.

Also attending was American ski star Lindsey Vonn. The Olympic downhill champion is a fan and friend of Federer’s. She arrived in Zurich hours after competing in a World Cup slalom in Courchevel, France.

In tournament play, Nadal leads Federer 14-8. Federer won their most recent meeting, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 decision in the title match of last month’s ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Do takich widowisk to potrzebny jest Federorowi Santoro, a nie Nadal. Sam oczywiście też miałem podobne oczekiwania, ale po kilku piłkach przypomniałem sobie kto stoi po drugiej stronie siatki.
90% spotkania to denna gra z baseline od której można dostawać odruchu wymiotnego po 10 miesiącach meczów o stawkę. Potężne rozczarowanie.

Co zrobić , to tylko pokazówka trudno liczyć żeby pokazywali 100% swoich możliwości.

No właśnie, to jest pokazówka. Nie chodzi o 100% możliwości, tylko efektowne wymiany dla publiczności. Tak wnioskuję, że o to chodziło przedmówcom, mówiąc, że mecz był słaby.

To, co było wczoraj było dość, hm, dziwne. Niby obaj mówili, że będą grać normalnie, nie będzie żadnego cyrku, ale miałem wrażenie, że Roger w pierwszym secie chciał się tak pobawić. Jakieś uśmieszki z dziewczynką od podawania piłek, podróże do siatki, mało zwracania uwagi na ustawienie... Przegrał seta, zauważył, że Nadal jednak gra normalnie i trzeba też zacząć grać normalnie, żeby siary dla Helwetów nie było. Hiszpan się podłożył na początku drugiego i już później poszło samo, najlepiej było to widoczne przy sktórach obu zawodników, Nadal do tych szwajcarskich nie startował, a Roger biegał w sumie do wszystkiego.

Dzisiaj na razie, hm, Roger od początku wie, że nie ma co liczyć na zabawę, jest poważny, przynajmniej sprawia wrażenie jakoś skoncentrowanego.  5-4* Roger w pierwszym.

Nie ma opcji by dziś wygrał Federer. Choćby jak słabo grał Rafa to panowie z góry musieli się ugadać, ze wygrywają po razie na własnej hali :]

Chyba wczoraj Panowie się oszczędzali, żeby dzisiaj nam pokazać świetne widowisko. Zaskakująca była szybkość kortu i niespotykany obecnie układ linii. Dla mnie chwilami piłka była zbyt mało widoczna, ale cóż... nie można mieć wszystkiego. Obejrzeliśmy dzisiaj rozluźnionego Feda, sypiącego niezwykłymi forehandami jak z rękawa. Mieliśmy jak zwykle dużo walki ze strony Rafy. Winnery z obu stron budziły u mnie spory szacunek i uśmiech zadowolenia na twarzy. Szwajcar nieźle przegonił dzisiaj Hiszpana po korcie. Obejrzeliśmy kilka naprawdę widowiskowych akcji. Serwis z obu stron na wysokim poziomie. Było też trochę śmiechu w trakcie spotkania. Jestem niezwykle pozytywnie nastawiony na następny sezon, po tym ostatnim spotkaniu w tym roku (powiedzmy że ostatnim, przecież w Abu Dhabi zaczną grać jeszcze przed Nowym Rokiem). Cieszę się, że jednak zostały zorganizowane te pokazówki, bo trochę wypełniły oczekiwanie na nowy sezon, a i cel przecież szczytny. Zacieram ręce na ew. finał AO pomiędzy oboma zawodnikami. To może być świetne widowisko, ale do tego czasu jeszcze wiele może się wydarzyć, więc może nie sięgajmy tak daleko w przyszłość. ;-)

The Caja Magica is familiar to both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Two of their past three tour-level meetings came at this venue, home of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, with Federer winning the final in 2009 and Nadal this past May.

On Wednesday night, it once against provided the stage for a meeting between the world’s top two players, but this time as a charity exhibition match – “Joining Forces For the Benefit Of Children” – to raise money for the Rafa Nadal Foundation.

“To me, today is a very special day,” said Nadal, who along with Federer was escorted onto the court by children. “I am lucky enough to be able to do what I love to do, which is to play tennis, but at the same time, through my Foundation, I get the opportunity to help hundreds of kids who are not as lucky.”

Spectators at the Caja Magica – including recently retired former World No. 1 Carlos Moya, Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and the royal family – were treated to another high-quality match Wednesday night, won by Nadal 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1.

After trading breaks to start the match, the set headed to a tie-break after Federer faced down three break points at 4-all and Nadal saved a set point in the next game. The 24-year-old Mallorcan took the mini-break to go up 3-1 in the tie-break and sealed the set with an ace.

Federer secured the only service break in the fifth game of the second set, but Nadal quickly took control in the third, racing out to a 3-0 lead. He converted on double break point opportunity to go up 5-1, and closed out the match on serve with a forehand winner.

The pair faced off in Federer’s home country for the first of two charity exhibitions Tuesday night – the ‘Match For Africa,’ won by the Swiss in three sets – raising $2.6 million for the Roger Federer Foundation.

“I just can say thank you very much to Roger to come here to Madrid and support my Foundation today,” said Nadal. “I did yesterday, and both of us are very happy that we can finally have this event and raise a lot of money for these kids. I know with what we’re going to raise yesterday and today, it’s not going to be decisive for that, but it will be a help and if everybody is convinced that everybody can help, it’s going to be important to improve a little bit this world.”

Wczorajszy mecz dużo lepszych, ale znów po I zrobił się monotonny.

Nalbandian zwyciężył w Urugwaju

W Conrad Punta del Este rozgrana została pierwsza edycja turnieju Claro Blackberry Summer Cup.

Organizatorzy zaprosili do rywalizacji czterech zawodników: Argentyńczyków Davida Nalbandiana (27 w rankingu ATP) i Gastona Gaudio (326) oraz Brazylijczyka Thomaza Bellucci (31) i Rosjanina Marata Safina.

W pojedynkach półfinałowych David wygrał z Maratem, natomiast Thomaz pokonał Gastona.

W finale zawodów Nalbandian, po wyrównanym i zaciętym spotkaniu, okazał się lepszy od Bellucciego.

Zawodnik z Argentyny triumfował w trzecim z rzędu turnieju pokazowym. Wcześniej zwyciężył w Copa Peugeot Argentina de Tenis 2010 i Copa Bicentenario (w obu finałach był lepszy od Juana Monaco).

Dla finalistów to ostatni start w w tym roku. Przed nimi ostatnie przygotowania przed występem w Auckland i Australian Open.

Federer-Nadal exhibitions raise almost $4 million

The charity exhibition matches played by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in Zurich and Madrid last week have raised almost $4 million so far.

The day after the match in Zurich, Federer announced that the event had raised $2.5 million for his foundation to support projects in Africa.

On Thursday, Nadal's foundation said the Madrid event brought in $1.32 million, a figure that will increase once pieces of the court have been sold off. A small portion of the surface on which the match was played is being offered for sale, packaged in a clear plastic box signed by Nadal.

Drużynowa pokazówka w Adelajdzie

Od 11 do 13 stycznia w Adelajdzie zostanie rozegrany turniej drużynowy World Tennis Challenge.

Na kortach Memorial Drive zmierzą się cztery dwuosobowe zespoły. W ich skład wchodzą byli znakomici gracze i aktywni zawodnicy.

Impreza po raz pierwszy odbyła się w 2009 roku. Wtedy triumfowała drużyna Stanów Zjednoczonych (Taylor Dent i Jim Courier).

Rok temu najlepsza była Australia i Azja (Bernard Tomic i Pat Cash).

W ekipie Ameryki zagrają John McEnroe i Ryan Harrison, który zastąpił Jamesa Blaka. Europę będą reprezentować Francuzi Henri Leconte i Michael Llodra.

W drużynie Australii i Azji znaleźli się Australijczyk Cash i Kei Nishikori z Japonii. Czwartą drużynę - Międzynarodową - stworzą Czech Ivan Lendl i Chorwat Ivan Ljubicic.

The University of Oregon's sparkling new facility will host four of the biggest stars from the professional tennis circuit, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, who are scheduled to perform March 8 in the "NIKE Clash of the Champions."

Tickets for this special showcase go on sale Friday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. and can be purchased online at www.MatthewKnightArena.com, at all Tickets West outlets, at the Matthew Knight Arena box office on 13th Avenue, and by calling 1-800-WEBFOOT (UO athletic ticket office) or 1-800-992-TIXX (Tickets West). A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will benefit each of the four athletes' charitable foundations.

"We are extremely excited to host some of the biggest names in professional tennis in Matthew Knight Arena," said Oregon Director of Athletics Rob Mullens. "Our unique partnership with NIKE has allowed us to attract this one-of-a-kind event to the University of Oregon and the Eugene-Springfield community.

"The NIKE Clash of the Champions is going to create tremendous buzz up and down the Willamette Valley," said Mullens. "It is a great example of the variety of events we are able to feature at Matthew Knight Arena."

The event, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., will feature Sharapova and Williams playing a singles set, followed by a mixed doubles set and concluding with a men's singles set between the top two players in the world, Federer and Nadal.

Federer owns a men's record 16 Grand Slam singles titles, including the 2010 Australian Open, while Nadal counts the 2010 French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open among his nine career Slam titles.

Sharapova brings the 2004 Wimbledon, 2006 U.S. Open and 2008 Australian Open to Eugene, while Williams has captured an amazing 27 career Grand Slam victories - 13 singles, 12 women's doubles and two mixed doubles - including singles titles in the 2010 Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Agassi will watch his mouth in new Sampras exhibition



Andre Agassi has vowed to be on best behaviour when he and longtime rival Pete Sampras meet in a charity exhibition at Madison Square Garden prior tothe start of the North American spring hardcourt ATP season.

The occasion, the BNP Paribas Showdown, is designed to raise funds for youth tennis as well as Agassi's Las Vegas education charity.

The date falls almost a year after the pair of old stagers went after each other at the Hit for Haiti exho at Indian Wells last March. On court and wearing head mics and playing with the well-mannered pair of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the Americans let rip at each other through evil jokes and outright insults - most of them coming from Agassi, the one-time bad-boy of the game.

"Our relationship is strictly platonic," Agassi joked in the run-up to the event. "As much time as we spent together, I never really knew him. Two different people, two different styles. Those differences were never bridged between us. But I recognize him as a superior athlete."

Agassi now says he's put the childish games behind and will be all business at the New York showdown. He added that he had apolosied to Sampras after last March. "I brought it about myself. I had a mic in my hand way too long," he said. "I've since apologized. We've looked at life differently over the years. Hopefully, we'll get to know each other better going forward."

MSG Exhibition: Sampras d. Agassi



NEW YORK—It was old-timers' night at Madison Square Garden, full of flashbacks on both the video board and the court. The most striking one of all? A running forehand winner in the second game of the match—by who else but Pete Sampras?—earning the 14-time Grand Slam champion two break points over longtime nemesis Andre Agassi. The balder man returned the favor later in the set, dismissing a fine Sampras serve with a laser-like return winner. Opposites in so many ways, Sampras and Agassi also have contrasting signature shots: Pete the unreturnable serve, Andre the unreturnable return.

There were more of the former than the latter in this match, a 6-3, 7-5 win for Sampras. But Sampras was sharper in all aspects: He seemed to move better, appeared more comfortable out there (did his match against Roger Federer at MSG in 2008, on a similar if not the same court, help his cause today?) and of course, had that potent serve. Agassi said afterward that one of his goals was to break Sampras' serve once. It took him until the fourth game of the second set to do it, and it would be the only time he did so.

As the match progressed, we saw less of the old and more of the new: Two icons whose games have inexorably been impacted by age. Sampras rarely served-and-volleyed; his net forays were often exposed by cross-court passes. But Agassi wasn't his usually reliable, sharp self from beginning to end. He struck too many errors, and two of the ugliest came in the penultimate game of the match, where Sampras broke serve for a 6-5 lead. Sampras has always had Agassi's number in New York City; the flashbacks reminded us of that. Even if the present didn't reflect the past in quality, it did in the result.

Nadal Gains Revenge Over Djokovic In Bogota Exhibition



Rafael Nadal gained revenge over Novak Djokovic in an exhibition match in Bogota, Colombia, just over 24 hours after they contested the BNP Paribas Open final in Indian Wells.

The World No. 1 defeated No. 2-ranked Djokovic 7-6(5), 6-3 in front of 14,000 spectators at the Coliseo El Campin in Bogota on Monday. Before the match, Djokovic performed a song and dance routine, while Nadal treated a female member of the crowd to his Latino dancing skills.

Both players have received byes into the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, which begins on Wednesday.

Nadal has won a record 18 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, while Djokovic is riding a 20-match winning streak, which includes lifting three tour-level trophies.

Tired Djokovic, Hewitt pull out of French exo

Novak Djokovic and Lleyton Hewitt have withdrawn from Thursday's Guinot-Mary Cohr exhibition in Paris, with Djokovic saying he is tired, L'Equipe reports. Djokovic just played three consecutive weeks in winning Belgrade, Madrid and Rome. Hewitt has just returned from surgery. The exhibition will now feature Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Nicolas Mahut and Andy Murray against Michael Llodra.
