Najmocniejsze punkty to moim zdaniem gra kątowa, świetny bekhend i agresywny return.

Późniejsze wyniki Nalbandiana to najdobitniej potwierdzają. Dawid, to kolejny gracz z serii utalentowanych, którzy swoją karierę skończą z przeciętnymi wynikami.

DUN I LOVE - 21-09-2008 15:10:02

Mimo zaskakujących porażek, moczenia wygranych meczów, David kilka swoich szans wykorzystał.
2 Mastersy + Turniej Mistrzów to znakomite wyniki, bez znaczenia w jakich okolicznościach osiągnięte.

Robertinho - 21-09-2008 16:49:02

Kolejny wielki, w znaczym stopniu zmarnowany talent. Ogrywał i Federera i Nadala.

Argentine tennis star David Nalbandian faces possible hip surgery

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — David Nalbandian may need surgery on his right hip and could miss Argentina's Davis Cup quarter-final against the Czech Republic in July.

Nalbandian withdrew from the Barcelona Open earlier this week, complaining of hip pain.

His physician in Europe, Angel Cotorro, told the Argentine newspaper Clarin that Nalbandian would receive three or four days of treatment including physical therapy and medication before a decision is made on surgery.

"It's a cautious treatment and we'll see how he responds," Cotorro told the newspaper.

Argentina faces the Czech Republic from July 10-12 in Ostrava.

The South Americans lost the Davis Cup final last year to Spain and are among the favourites to reach the final again with a team lead by Juan Martin del Potro and Nalbandian.

Del Potro is No. 5 and Nalbandian No. 15 in the ATP rankings

Nalbandian doubt for French Open

Argentina's two-times French Open semi-finalist David Nalbandian faces a fight to be fit for the event after a hip injury resurfaced in his first-round defeat at the Estoril Open.

The 27-year-old was thumped 6-2 6-2 by Chile's Paul Capdeville , with Nalbandian frustrated after initially hurting his hip little more than a week ago in Barcelona.

All he can do now prior to a possible start next week at the new Madrid Masters on clay is undergo more physio.

"I'll do my best to try and play in Paris," he said.

Nalbandian stayed in Barcelona last week instead of playing in Rome to undergo treatment from the Real club doctor after being forced to pull out of his quarter-final 10 days ago against Rafael Nadal.

While the work helped him to take to the court at the Estadio Nacional on a sun-drenched start of the week, he only lasted for 52 minutes, losing serve five times to his fellow South American who is ranked 91st and now standing 4-5 this season.

"The injury still bothers me. I have to keep working on getting better," said Nalbandian.

"My preparation coming to Estoril was as good as possible but limited due to my ongoing injury.

"I did everything I could to recover on time to play this tournament."

The Argentine won the Estoril trophy in 2002 and 2006 and suffered only his second defeat in 12 matches at the tournament.

Speculation in South America had suggested that Nalbandian might follow in the footsteps of now-retired Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, Swedish ex-player Magnus Norman and Australian number on Lleyton Hewitt, and undergo hip surgery.

That option has not been publicly discussed.

David Nalbandian has undergone a successfully hip surgery in Barcelona.

The 27-year-old was operated on in Barcelona to heal an injury he has been carrying for almost one year and may be off the courts for four months.

On his official website, the world's number 15 said: "I still have a lot to play for and I keep my goal to retire by winning a Grand Slam or the Davis Cup. It would be the best."

"David's health condition is perfect. He is very well," said Nalbandian's doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro.

"We have decided with David that he will complete the first phase of the rehabilitation here in Barcelona and then after that phase that is due to be completed in late May, he will fly back to Argentina.

"We hope David will recover in no more than four months and he can go back to the tennis courts as soon as possible."

Nalbandian Back On Practice Court Next Week

After undergoing hip surgery just three months ago on 13 May, former World No. 3 David Nalbandian hopes to return to the practice court in 10 days time and resume competitive tennis once more at the Australian Open in January.

The Argentine, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2002 (l. to Hewitt), said his main goals when he returns are to win a Grand Slam and the Davis Cup. The Cordoba native was part of the Argentine Davis Cup team that finished runner-up in 2008 (l. to Spain) and 2006 (l. to Russia).

“The aim is to once more return to the Top 10, maintain my position and try to win a Grand Slam,” affirmed Nalbandian. “And obviously, Davis Cup is one of my dreams as well.”

The 27 year old, whose last appearance was a first-round loss at the Estoril Open, confirmed that the rehabilitation after the surgery went better than expected and that he is motivated to start training physically for his comeback. He will hit for 20 minutes a day and increase his time on the court gradually.

“It was very difficult to make the decision to have the surgery,” admitted Nalbandian. “I tried to push it as much as possible but I was suffering when I played and I could not continue like that. There was no other option.”

Life away from the court has been very quiet for Nalbandian, who has spent the time at home in Unquillo, a province of Cordoba, with his friends. On his return, he will look to follow in the footsteps of former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, who underwent hip surgery last August and has made a successful comeback – winning his 27th tour-level title in Houston (d. Odesnik) and reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals (l. to Roddick).

Former world number three and 2002 Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian will make his comeback from hip surgery in an exhibition tournament in Buenos Aires in December.

The Argentine had surgery on the joint in May.

He will be joined on the clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club by Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, Spaniard Carlos Moya, Russian Marat Safin, Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and compatriot Juan Monaco.

Nalbandian plans to return to the ATP circuit in January in Sydney where he will defend his title and play in the Australian Open.

Nalbandian Targets NZ Return

David Nalbandian will test his surgically-repaired right hip in Auckland in January.

Nalbandian, who underwent surgery on his hip in May in Barcelona, has entered the Heineken Open set for January 11-16, tournament director Richard Palmer announced today.

It will be Nalbandian's first tournament since he lost to Paul Capdeville in the opening round of Estoril in May. The former World No. 3 has entered the field while his Davis Cup teammate, Juan Martin del Potro, has opted against defending his Auckland title. Del Potro beat Sam Querrey in straight sets to win Auckland last January.

"Nalbandian is a quality player who has something special in his game," tournament director Richard Palmer said. "He's the sort of player who has the ability to really challenge for the Heineken Open title and get back into the top 10."

Doctors Marc Philippon, who operated on Gustavo Kuerten's hip, and Jaime Vilaro performed the procedure on Nalbandian's hip. The 2006 Australian Open semifinalist sustained the injury in Argentina's 2008 Davis Cup quarterfinal win against Sweden and tried various forms of rehab and rest, but his hip was unresponsive to treatment, compelling him to undergo surgery.

"It was very difficult to make the decision to have the surgery," said Nalbandian. "I tried to push it as much as possible but I was suffering when I played and I could not continue like that. There was no other option."

The 2002 Wimbledon runner-up to Lleyton Hewitt, opened his 2009 campaign beating Michael Llodra, Hewitt, Richard Gasquet and Jarkko Nieminen in succession to capture his 10th career singles title in Sydney.

Former French Open champion Kuerten, former French Open finalist Magnus Norman and former World No. 1 Hewitt have all undergone hip surgery in recent years. Hewitt is the only one of the three still playing. Kuerten and former French Open finalist Magnus Norman were never the same players after undergoing surgery, however Hewitt did enjoy success in his return from hip surgery this season. Hewitt won the Houston title on clay then upset del Potro en route to the Wimbledon quarterfinals where he lost a close clash to Andy Roddick.

Nalbandian will celebrate his 28th birthday on January 1. Currently ranked No. 20, he said his goals remain clear: regain his spot in the top 10, win a Grand Slam singles title and help Argentina win its first Davis Cup championship.

"The aim is to once more return to the top 10, maintain my position and try to win a Grand Slam," Nalbandian said. "And obviously, Davis Cup is one of my dreams as well."

Two more Years enjoying David’s Game
“King” David has set a date: he says he thinks of withdrawing from competition after his 30th birthday. There are still two more years to go since he will be 28 next January 1st. His idea is to go on playing a couple of years more and try to achieve his greatest dream: the Davis Cup. "In this stage, I will see how I am year after year. And it depends a lot on how my hip is, if I feel well and competitive", he said. The player from Córdoba said: “If I start feeling limitations, I will have to reconsider the situation”: Nalbandian, who was operated on the hip some time ago, will make his comeback to the ATP circuit next January, in the Auckland ATP.

Nalbandian To Make Return In Exhibition

Former World No. 3 David Nalbandian will make his first competitive appearance in his return from hip surgery on Saturday at the San Juan Minero exhibition tournament in San Juan, Argentina.

The 27-year-old Nalbandian declared he is now fully recovered from the hip injury that has seen him sidelined from the ATP World Tour since 8 May, when he announced he would undergo surgery to resolve the problem. His last match was a first-round loss to Paul Capdeville at the Estoril Open.

“I'm really looking forward to returning to playing tennis,” said the Cordoba native. “My tennis and physical fitness are both at a high level. The past six months of recovery have been very tough, but it has also given me the chance to rest and spend time with my family and friends in Unquillo.”

“I have a great desire to return to the circuit", added Nalbandian, who will open the 2010 ATP World Tour season at the Heineken Open in Auckland, New Zealand beginning 11 January.

The Argentine has also confirmed he will feature at the Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires, beginning 14 February. The 2008 winner will be joined by countryman and 2007 champion Juan Monaco and Spaniard David Ferrer, who will make his fourth event appearance.

Nalbandian forced out by injury

Source: ReutersDavid Nalbandian

Auckland's Heineken Open tennis has lost its biggest drawcard with the withdrawal of Argentinian ace David Nalbandian.
The former world number three suffered a light abdominal strain in warm-ups and has had to pull out of what was going to be his first tournament in eight months.
Nalbandian hadn't played on the ATP tour since May, when he underwent surgery on his right hip.
I am very disappointed not to be able to make my comeback this week at the Heineken Open. I was very much looking forward into playing in Auckland once again," Nalbandian said.
"I didn't play much tennis for eight months so it is natural to suffer some small injuries. Although I am disappointed at the moment, I remain confident and positive about making a full time come back to the tour soon.
"I thank tournament director Richard Palmer for giving me the wild card and the opportunity to resume my career and I hope to come back next year and play in front of the kiwi crowd."
Nalbandian's withdrawl is a blow for the tournament, particularly as his match against former Heineken Open champion Philipp Kohlschreiber looked set to be the biggest match of the first round.
"I'm disappointed, but what can you do," Palmer said.
"It's not the first time this has happened to me in a tournament, and if I keep doing this it will happen again."
A ultrasound scan at a radiology practice confirmed Nalbandian's injury and it puts his participation in the Australian Open in doubt.
"These usually take 10 to 15 days to come right," Palmer said.
Nalbandian's place in the draw will be taken by world number 235 Inigo Cervantes-Huegin of Spain.

Nalbandian out of Australian Open

Injury woes have once again sidelined world No. 46 David Nalbandian from the 2010 Australian Open.

Nalbandian withdrew from his first round match in Auckland on Sunday.

The Argentine had originally intended on staying in Auckland until the end of the week, but after an MRI scan, physician’s suggested that the damage was far to severe to risk further injury.

Nalbandian’s upcoming tournament schedule has yet to be determined.

Nalbandian comeback stalls with muscle tear David Nalbandian's dream of returning to Davis Cup next month in a recovery after 2009 hip surgery was postponed by weeks as the one-time Wimbledon finalist suffered a groin muscle tear on court in Buenos Aires.

Nalbandian preparing for Wimbledon

Injury hit Argentine David Nalbandian has said that he intends to be physically fit and ready for a return to Wimbledon as he sets his sights on competing once again at The Championships starting on June 21.

Nalbandian captures 11th career title in Washington

Argentina's David Nalbandian defeated Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Sunday.

David Nalbandian did not play like he was the 117 ranked tennis player in the world. The oft-injured Argentine was completely dominant in the first set of Sunday's final against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

Nalbandian served terribly in the opening set; his first serve percentage was just 42%, but Baghdatis did not return anywhere near well enough to make a dent on the Argentine's serve. Baghdatis did not earn a single service break, while going 0 for 2 on break points against.

The second set was more exciting, with most points ending in either fantastic winners or else dreadful errors. Both men hit the ball with so much pace, that any mistiming at all sent the ball feet beyond the lines.

Still, the shot-making was impressive. Nalbandian went up an early break, and a easy win for the Argentine seemed imminent. It was not to be. A few loose forehands and some good returning from Baghdatis gave the Cypriot the break back at 2-3.

Nalbandian's next service game featured another pair of break points, but the Argentine was able to fight them off. The set stayed on serve to force the tiebreaker.

Baghdatis got in an immediate whole on the first point of the breaker. Nalbandian went on to quickly reel off the next 5 points, as the Baghdatis backhand soared on him. Not to be outdone, Nalbandian went on to lose the next 3 points, including a double fault.

An error from Baghdatis set up match points, which Nalbandian immediately converted with a great serve. Both men will head to Toronto for the Rogers Cup next week.

The unrealized talent of David Nalbandian

The summer suddenly became considerably more interesting with the end of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C., and not because the U.S. players who traditionally do well there were all swept out before the semifinals.

For the third consecutive year, an Argentine player won the event, triggering an outcry to change the name of Rock Creek to Rio Piedra. This time, it wasn't Juan Martin del Potro doing damage on behalf of the baby blue-and-white. It was long-lost David Nalbandian, the mercurial bon vivant who started the tournament with a ranking of No. 117 but who will now vault into the top 50. He became the first guy ranked outside the top 100 to win a tournament this year with his tidy 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over that other Lost (but dangerous) Boy of tennis, Marcos Baghdatis.

It was quite a ride for Nalbandian, the 28-year old cannon of Cordoba. And I'm not talking about this week -- I'm talking about an entire career here. Nalbandian's career has been filled with more dips and peaks than the infamous "Beast," the roller coaster at King's Island Park near Cincinnati, in the shadow of which Nalbandian probably will be laboring in a couple of weeks at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Remember that time Nalbandian had the selfsame Baghdatis on the ropes in the semis of the Australian Open, only to let it slip away 6-4 in the fifth? How about that time he won the first set off Roger Federer in the French Open semis, and looked to be rolling in the second, when he had to quit because of a torn stomach muscle? Remember when he stunned everyone by making the final at Wimbledon or that five-set semifinal he lost to Andy Roddick in the semis at the U.S. Open?

This guy has been around the Grand Slam block, and he's run circles around some Masters 1000 events as well. Remember 2007 when he beat Federer and Rafael Nadal in back-to-back Masters finals (Madrid and Paris, respectively)? Nalbandian is a leading candidate for that dubious distinction, "best player never to win a major." Every pro on the tour considers him dangerous, even if he's mostly been deadly on himself.

Nalbandian makes no bones about enjoying the good life -- race cars, a blowout asada now and then, a guest appearance as a rapper in a music video created by some hometown buddies, an Argentinean hip-hop outfit. Sometimes, training has fallen by the wayside. Sometimes his focus has wavered. Remember four years ago when he appeared to dive into the tank at Wimbledon, just so he wouldn't miss the telecast of World Cup match featuring Argentina?

All this dilly-dallying, combined with some bad luck and injuries, has kept Nalbadian's title count at a modest 11, absurdly low for so talented a player. Before this past week, he hadn't played a tournament since February. How do you explain this? It's simple: The first thing you learn if you take the time to study the great tennis head cases of our time. He didn't expect to win this event (how could he?), therefore, he won it.

Granted, this guy has had a lot of trouble stepping up when he's raised the bar of expectations. That may happen again, in which case Rafa and the boys have little to worry about.

But Nalbandian knows the clock on his career is ticking, and he's managed to whip himself into pretty good shape following his long, injury-induced layoff. Even a good-time Charley tennis pro can't avoid maturity forever, and if Nalbandian is going to slough off his reputation as a unrealized talent, he'll have to act soon.

Nalbandian's surface of choice is hard courts, and if he can remain hard-nosed and injury free, his multi-directional backhand, his talent for opening up the court, his deceptive quickness and pin-point counterpunching could make life uncomfortable in the coming weeks for the men who have the one thing he doesn't -- that major title.

David Nalbandian completes comeback

WASHINGTON -- Confident as David Nalbandian is, he harbored some doubts about how he would play at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

After all, he was ranked 117th after missing about 12 of the past 15 months because of injuries. He hadn't played in a tournament since April. He needed a wild-card invitation merely to get into the field.

A week later, he leaves as the hard-court tournament's champion -- and someone to watch at the U.S. Open.

Argentina's Nalbandian became the first player ranked outside the top 100 to win an ATP title in 2010, using his typically strong service returns and effective baseline game to beat No. 25 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-2, 7-6 (4) on Sunday in a Legg Mason final between two past Grand Slam finalists.

"If he plays like that," Baghdatis said, "he can beat a lot of guys in the top 10."

It's Nalbandian's 11th career title, but his first on U.S. soil, and first anywhere in 1½ years. He hadn't entered a tournament since April, sidelined by a bad left hamstring. Before that, Nalbandian missed nearly 10 months starting in May 2009 because of hip surgery.

"I didn't expect to win my first tournament," Nalbandian said. "In the beginning, if I had to bet, I [wouldn't have] bet on myself, of course."

Perhaps. But the 2002 Wimbledon runner-up is back on tour and back to giving opponents fits, particularly with his returning. He broke four of the first seven times Baghdatis served.

"He's putting a lot of pressure on the return," said Baghdatis, who twisted his left ankle in the semifinals Saturday and said he felt pain early in the final.

Baghdatis had a chance to extend the match while leading 6-5 in the second set. He held a set point at 30-40 on Nalbandian's serve, but put a forehand into the net on a 10-stroke exchange. Nalbandian eventually held serve there, then surged to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker.

"Basically," Baghdatis would say later, "that's it."

Well, not quite: Baghdatis won the next three points. Plus, Nalbandian had problems with his serve throughout the second set -- he faced 11 break points, although he saved all but two -- and he hit his seventh double-fault of the day on his first match point. But Baghdatis then missed a forehand to end the match after 1 hour, 59 minutes.

Nalbandian has reached at least the semifinals five times at major championships, and was ranked as high as No. 3. But all of the recent time off, including skipping the past six Grand Slam tournaments, contributed to a slide down the rankings that dropped him to 161st.

He's climbing his way up, expected to return to the top 50 on Monday. The unseeded Nalbandian was impressive all week, winning 12 of 13 sets while upsetting four seeded players: No. 4 Marin Cilic, No. 7 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 13 Gilles Simon, and No. 8 Baghdatis, who lost to Roger Federer in the 2006 Australian Open final.

Asked if he feels as though he's playing like someone who's in the top 10, Nalbandian said: "So far, the ranking doesn't say so, but I think I won some great matches and that's what counts."

Nalbandian won Sunday's prematch coin toss and chose to receive, a relatively rare strategy at this level, but one that makes sense. He long has been considered one of the game's top returners and entered Sunday having broken opponents in a tournament-best 59 percent of their service games during the week.

And Nalbandian went right to work on Baghdatis, breaking at love in the opening game with the help of a forehand return winner. The match was a minute old, but the tone was set.

Cheered by dozens of fans waving Argentina's blue-and-white flag, Nalbandian gave his country a third consecutive title in Washington. Juan Martin del Potro won the tournament in 2008 and 2009 -- following up the latter with a U.S. Open championship -- but he has been out since January because of right wrist surgery and didn't enter.

Based on Nalbandian's performances this week, it seems likely that players will hope to avoid facing him on the U.S. Open's hard courts, where action begins Aug. 30.

"If I continue playing this good," Nalbandian said Sunday, looking ahead to Flushing Meadows, "I have chances to go very far."

Notes
Mardy Fish of the United States and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas won the doubles title, beating Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 4-6, 7-6 (7), 10-7 tiebreak.

ATP Waszyngton: Nalbandian triumfuje

Nalb to jeden z 7-8 najbardziej utytułowanych graczy spośród tych aktywnych zawodowo.

A no właśnie.

"It was a strange year because of the injuries. But in the second half of the season I felt good because I was able to compete on a regular basis. I'm quite happy about what I've achieved this year."

Nalb w 2010
Rozegranych spotkań: 36
Bilans meczów: 27-9
Tytuły/Finały: 1/0 (tytuł w Waszyngtonie)
Ranking: 25
Zarobki: $575,726

David receives Konex de Platino Award

David has been awarded the "Konex de Platino" by the Fundación Konex, honouring his achievements and role in Argentine sports in the last decade. The foundation's awards are given to Argentine athletes, as well as public figures from a variety of other fields.

The jury, presided over by Gabriela Sabatini, selected five Argentine athletes with outstanding achievements in the last decade from 20 different sports (ranging from tennis and football to rugby, polo and sports for the disabled) to receive a so-called "Diploma al Mérito". For tennis, the five selected players were: David, Guillermo Coria, Gaston Gaudio, Juan Martin Del Potro and Paola Suárez.
Out of those five, one athlete in each of the 20 different sports was singled out for the Konex de Platino award. And in the tennis category, the award went to David. (His friend Adolfo Cambiaso picked up the one for polo and Lionel Messi won it in the football category.) While basketball star Manu Ginobili was crowned Argentine athlete of the last decade. (Source: Clarin/DyN.)

From David's Twitter:

I thank the Fundación Konex for bestowing the Konex de Platino award on me.
I dedicate it to my family for their support throughout my career.

AO 2011 - wywiad po zwycięstwie w 1 rundzie

Q. How much of a factor playing Lleyton at home is in your mind when you go onto the court and potentially it could be his last appearance here at the Australian Open?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: You mean before the match?

Q. Yes.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Before the match I thought the match will be very, very tough, like was. I mean, he didn't play a lot in the last month, and I thought maybe if I play good with good shots, maybe he wasn't on a good move.

I mean, but he play unbelievable. From the beginning was very tough. Very tough first round. And I expect a match like that with the crowd. It's amazing playing with full stadium, with him here in Australia.

But I think we both have a lot of chances. I mean, I was two match points down and then I turnover. I was serving for the match before in the fifth. It was that kind of matches that nobody can forget it.

Q. You played him here five years ago in a similar situation. Did that memory play any part for you tonight as well?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: No, that was quarterfinals, was many years ago. We both are older now with hip surgery. It is not easy to come back. I think we play a very intense tennis today until the end. We was both cramping, very tired. We fight. We both fight until the very end.

Q. Do you have any more energy for the next round?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I hope so. I have a day off tomorrow or today (smiling). I hope so. Gonna do all the things necessary to try to recover, to be ready.

But these kind of matches give a lot of confidence, as well. So we will see.

AO 2011 - wywiad po porażce (kreczu) w 2 rundzie

Q. How much did the first round match against Lleyton Hewitt take out of you?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: A lot. Of course, today I was like empty, you know? Didn't feel good. Is tough, very tough.

Q. Was it an injury or just tiredness?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Everything. Nothing specific. Like empty, you know? I toss a ball for the serve and everything was moving around. It's tough playing like that.

Call the doctor. Told me that dangerous playing like that. That's why I retired.

Q. What about emotionally? You and Lleyton are great rivals, such a big match. Did you lack motivation coming into this match?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: It's completely different. Of course, it's better if you won. But sometimes is difficult. Of course, playing Lleyton on center court with all the crowd, it's a different motivations. But this tournament, all matches are very important, as well.

But today I try, but I couldn't.

Q. Did you feel like that right from the start?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: I feel a little better in the beginning. But every game getting little worse. So worser and worse. Not much to do really.

Q. What about your opponent, what do you make of him and his future?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, he obviously is a good player. Unfortunately, I couldn't effort him very much. But looks like he's going to be a good one.

Q. How long do you think it's going to take you to be at the same fitness level as you were before?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, you never know. Matches are matches. Sometimes you play a short match but with a lot of stress on it, with a lot of pressure. That sometimes is worse than playing four hours. You never know.

But I think during the year I'm going to be better.

David Nalbandian Will Go Down As the Greatest of All Time...to Be Slam-Less

http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/images/photos/001/034/987/103855266_crop_340x234.jpg?1285361326

Eight years ago, the tennis world watched in shock as a relatively unknown Argentine stormed to the Wimbledon final. He was stocky, gritty, and ornery, but there was something intriguing about his game, something that hinted at his vast potential. His return of serve was smooth and potent, and his backhand was fearsome. His future was bright, and certainly a Grand Slam title awaited him.

Fast-forward through a career littered with injuries, mental lapses, and missed opportunities, however, and we're left wondering whether David Pablo Nalbandian earn the infamous designation of being the greatest player of all time to finish his career without a Grand Slam title?

His results scream a resounding "Yes!"

Following his breakthrough performance at Wimbledon in 2002, Nalbandian built upon his success the next year, making it to the Montreal final (losing to Roddick), and then to the U.S. Open semifinals, dispatching former finalist Mark Philppoussis and some scrub named Roger Federer (for the second time in a Slam and third time overall that year) along the way.

In the semis, Nalbandian faced Roddick once again, and seemed to have turned the tables on the American. In what would become a recurring theme for the man from Córdoba, Nalbandian held a two-set lead and a match point in the third set tiebreak, but failed to convert; he lost his nerve and consequently the match, ensuring that Roddick would not go down as the Greatest to Never Win a Slam.

In 2003, Nalbandian reached his third Slam semifinal is as many years, and on as many surfaces, displaying his versatility. En route to the Roland Garros semis, the Argentine defeated Marat Safin and three-time champion Guga Kuerten, and entered his semifinal showdown against compatriot Gaston Gaudio as the heavy favorite.

Inexplicably, Nalbandian folded, losing in straight sets and cordially paving the way for Gaudio to become the worst Grand Slam champion of all time. The following year saw more of the same from Nalbandian, who made it deep into the Slams only to come up short against lesser competition, as was the case in his loss to Thomas Johansson in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

And then it happened.

Just when we were ready to label him a perennial disappointment and head case, the Argentine showcased just what he was capable of. After losing the first two sets in hotly contested tiebreaks to Federer in the 2005 Masters Cup final, the Nalbandian we had expected to see all along emerged. At times he seemed to wield a wand rather than a racket, creating incredible angles, deftly volleying, and painting the lines with his blistering ground strokes. He blitzed Federer in the third and fourth sets and ultimately won the biggest title of his career to date in a fifth-set tiebreaker.

Surely now he would realize his potential and go all the way at a Slam, right?

He rode the momentum of his victory into the next year, breezing into the Australian Open semis, completing his “semi Slam.” There, Nalbandian faced the then-obscure, pudgy, loveable Cypriot, Marcos Baghdatis. Despite leading two sets to love and being up 4-2 in the deciding set, the Argentine once again imploded, losing 6-4 in the fifth.

At Roland Garros, Nalbandian battled his way to the semifinals, winning the first set from Federer and breaking him early in the second. The usually stoic Swiss was so flustered by Nalbandian’s play that he demolished his racket in a rare display of anger. However, predictably, a Nalbandian victory was not to be, as he was forced to retire.

After the 2006 Roland Garros semis, Nalbandian struggled to put together any meaningful runs until the tail end of 2007. Out of nowhere, the Argentine went on a tear unlike any in his career—and unlike any in the career of any player not named Nadal or Federer, for that matter.

At the Madrid Masters, Nalbandian defeated Berdych, del Potro, Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer in succession, becoming just the third player ever to defeat the world’s top three in the same tournament. The next week, Nalbandian defeated Federer and Nadal again en route to his second consecutive Masters shield, becoming the first player ever to defeat the two in the same tournament twice, as well as the first man to defeat both in an ATP final.

Since then, his results have been middling at best, and have left us scratching our heads. He may not be in the twilight of his career just yet, but he’s at least in the late afternoon of it; while he may still be able to take out a big name or two in the Slams, it’s doubtful that he’ll go all the way. Whether it’s his love for other sports (he’s an avid car racer and once tanked a match to watch Argentina in the World Cup), his propensity for getting injured, or nerves, I can say with certainty that Nalbandian will finish his career without a Slam.

What he has accomplished, though, qualifies him as the GOATTHNWAS, or the Greatest of All Time to Have Never Won a Slam. Outside of the world’s current top three, he’s the only guy to reach the semis at all four Slams. In an era that features two men who could each be the GOAT, Nalbandian has held his own, having been known at different times as both Nadal’s and Federer’s kryptonite. His career-high ranking is No. 3, and in the deepest era of men’s tennis to date, he managed to finish in the top 10 for five consecutive years between 2003-2007. Throw in a Year-End Championship, and there you have it.

The only other players who I think come close to being the GOATTHNWAS are Miloslav Mecir and Todd Martin. I believe that Nalbandian is more of an all-court player than Martin, and also possesses a more complete repertoire of shots. I’m too young to have seen Mecir play, and while it’s true that the Czech had a more prolific career than Nalbandian has had, winning Olympic gold and reaching two Slam finals, I give the Argentine the edge for playing in the era of Nadal and Federer. Also, perhaps most importantly, Nalbandian was named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People en Español, which has to count for something.

Davis Cup - Nalbandian to have hernia op

http://d.yimg.com/i//ng/sp/eurosport/20110310/25/9617e4937a32e62805ccd8f696b75b92.jpg

Argentina’s David Nalbandian will undergo an operation to correct the hernia problem that reduced him to tears during his heroic Davis Cup win over Adrian Ungur on March 4.

The world number 19 battled to a 6-3 6-2 5-7 6-4 win over the Romanian despite clearly suffering from the injury, which he picked up during his quarter-final defeat to Tommy Robredo at the ATP Buenos Aires tournament in February.
He will be out for at least two months after undergoing the op on Friday, which will also correct an injury to his adductor muscles.
"It was one of the worst moments of my career," Nalbandian, 29, said. "In any other tournament I would have pulled out, but I could not abandon (a national team match).
"It was a horrible experience, but I could not do anything else."
Former world number three Nalbandian is expected to return in time for the Madrid Masters or the Rome Masters early in May as he bids to be fit for the French Open at the end of the month.

The Withdrawal Method - David out of Nice and Roland Garros

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nF6Zo4t4NaE/TcmbOoPEkhI/AAAAAAAAD2g/IvXEazwRWmY/s1600/RG.jpg

The courts are being prepared at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris. But once again, David won't be among those, playing on them. Earlier today, his spokesman Bernardo Ballero delivered the news that David has decided to pull out of Nice and Roland Garros, making this the third year in a row that he will miss the clay-court Slam.
Ballero spoke to Argentine news agency Telam, I'll quote from their article.

"Because of the fact that he didn't get match practice on clay, Nalbandian decided not to play Nice and Roland Garros and to continue his recovery in order to make his comeback on the Tour in the best possible way."

"David had a fever that affected him for a week and delayed his training, and that led to him, taking the decision to withdraw from Nice and Roland Garros."

Being one of the Grand Slam tournaments, Roland Garros is played in the best-of-five format, which means that it requires a greater physical effort from the players. An issue that was also evaluated among Nalbandian's team.
Therefore, he will return to the Tour at the Queen's Club tournament in England, which starts on June 6.

- Apparently with a wildcard, since David's name is not on the Queen's Club entry list.

Update
More from Ballero, this time via Cancha Llena:

As his spokesman Bernardo Ballero confirmed to canchallena.com, Nalbandian is not yet in top shape, physically. A week after the operation, which took place in March, David suffered a severe fever, because of which he had to rest for 10 days and which made him lose five to six kilos of muscle mass that according to Ballero he "still hasn't recovered".

"He shouldn't have any problems, coming back at Queen's," the spokesman said. Nalbandian will return at this event, prior to the tournament at Wimbledon, which starts on June 20. He also said that he will play the Davis Cup quarterfinal against Kazakhstan.

That's the official version and as much info as there is at the moment. The rest is questions and speculations. What's clear is that his preparations have been severely affected by his illness and the loss of weight that went with it. But if he's "ready" now as Ballero said in another quote (mentioned in the previous post) the question remains why he doesn't go and give it a try, as he could still pull out later if it doesn't work out. Personally, I'm getting the impression that playing on clay as such (outside of the Davis Cup, I might add) is considered too much of a risk. And I'd like to think that's because of David's latest surgeries. But it's probably something else... Even if that certain something is still two months away.
David will do whatever it takes to be there and in shape for the Davis Cup quarterfinal tie in July. That's the one thing that is certain. Last year, in a similar situation, he skipped Wimbledon for the same reason. So will he travel to Britain this time? I very much hope so - but I wouldn't bet my house on it.

Wimbledon 2011 - wywiad po porażce w 3 rundzie

D Nalbandian def by R. Federer 4-6, 2-6, 4-6
Q. What was the injury?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: No, the adds. (Adductors) I get surgery four month ago, and I feel a little bit on one part of the match.

Trainer help me with that, so I hope not a big deal.

Q. Did it affect your performance at all?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, sometimes a little bit feels a little pain, but not much. Just a little bit. So didn't affect really, really much. I mean, he played much better than me today, so no excuse.

Q. You obviously played Roger a lot over the years. Can you compare the way he's playing now to the way he was playing three or four years ago?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, three, four years ago I think he's playing the same level. He improve a lot from, I don't know, six, seven years ago.

After that, he play incredible level all the time, every match, and especially here on grass. He's one of the most winner of the tournament, so he's a great player.

Q. So do you think it's more that maybe Nadal and Djokovic have improved rather than him getting worse?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, Rafa improves a lot, and Novak as well. Novak has amazing year this time, so I think all of those guys improve a lot.

If you didn't do that, it's impossible to be in the top.

Q. And just to come back to you, you've had a lot of injuries recently. How tough is it to keep coming back from that over and over again?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: It is tough. The recovery is very tough, especially for your mind, at home doing just exercise, not training hard as we wish.

But it's very tough on the mind especially.
