W każdej plotce jest odrobina prawdy, w tej niestety także.
Już któryś raz się czepiają Melbourne, tylko dlaczego? Zgoda, najniższa pula nagród, frekwencja relatywnie do innych tego typu eventów też średnia, niemniej z roku na rok się podnosi i to grubo
Oczywiście to nie wynika z tego, że nikt na Antypodach nie interesuje się tenisem (Australijczycy kochają ten sport), po prostu odległość o innych większych lądów nieco większa. Ci co tam byli twierdzą, że jest rewelacyjnie, ale najwyraźniej czasy w jakich przyszło nam żyć patrzą na inne wartości.

W Melbourne mają wszystko. Melbourne Park po remoncie i zmianie nazwy z Flinders Park jest nowoczesnym kompleksem tenisowym, gdzie po prostu nie sposób nie chcieć grać w tenisa.
Zasuwany dach, dużo kortów, sensowne rozmieszczenie, kapitalne warunki dla kibiców (szeroki dostęp do treningów graczy, spotkań z zawodnikami czy dużo miejsc z różnego rodzaju foodcourtami i kafejkami netowymi).

3 inne czynniki, których nie ma chyba żaden Szlem:
* fenomenalna australijska publika
* cudowna pogoda (oczywiście często za gorąco, ale generalnie mało opadów, co pozwala rozegrać turniej bez większych problemów)
* sesje nocne (tutaj bardzo rzadko mecze wieczorne zawodzą kibiców, w przeciwieństwie do USO - nie wiem z czego to wynika, ale podciągniemy to pod urok i magie Antypodów).

Sydney ma swój turniej ATP i niech tak zostanie. Choć, żebym miał wybierać między stolicą Nowej Południowej Walii, a np Dubajem to bez wahania wybrałbym Sydney I Alan byłby szczęśliwy

Reasumując, po prostu trudno mi sobie wyobrazić inną nazwę turnieju niż "Australian Open from Melbourne".

Umowa pomiędzy lokalnymi władzami, a organizatorami Australian Open przewidywała rozgrywanie turnieju w Melbourne Park do roku 2016. W poniedziałek oficjele zdecydowali jednak o przedłużeniu tego okresu na czas nieokreślony. Za tą decyzją pójdzie rozbudowa i modernizacja istniejącej infrastruktury.

Australian Open rozgrywany jest od 1905 roku, zaś Melbourne Park stał się domem wielkoszlemowego turnieju w Sydney w roku 1988 i nieprzerwanie pozostaje nim do dziś.

Bardzo się cieszę z tej decyzji. Podjęli najlepszą z możliwych. Oglądałem po części turniej w Sydney i rzeczywiście wiało okrutnie. Czasami nawet piłka leciała nie w tą stronę co trzeba, a to już lekka przesada, musiałyby tam być dobrze okryte korty, a z tego co wiem to za dużo ch tam nie mają.

Melbourne ma ten niepowtażalny klimat, którego Sydney nie jest w stanie podrobic Chociaż czym innym jest "klimat" dla nas kibiców, a czym innym dla zawodników. Ci drudzy niekoniecznie z owego klimatu są zawsze zachwyceni

Melbourne Tennis Centre nets $363m upgrade

UPDATE 12.35pm: MELBOURNE will become the first Grand Slam host in the world to boast three undercover courts under a major redevelopment of Rod Laver Arena.

Premier John Brumby unveiled details of the $363 million first stage of the redevelopment on day two of the Australian Open tennis today.

The plans include a facelift of Margaret Court Arena - including the installation of a retractable roof and an extra 1500 seats - as well as a new eastern plaza next to Hisense Arena and 21 new courts.

It will make the first Grand Slam of the season the only major tournament to boast three covered courts -- Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena are the others.

The State Government says the revamp will ensure the event stays in Melbourne beyond 2016, preventing rival cities like Shanghai or Dubai from poaching the tournament.

“Importantly it locks in the Open until at least 2036,'' Sports Minister James Merlino said.

Stage one works will begin in April and take about five years to complete.

The Rod Laver Arena masterplan is a 10- to-15-year project.

Mr Brumby said the Australian Open was the biggest annual sporting event in the southern hemisphere and the revamped venue would make Melbourne the only grand slam host with three undercover courts.

“This will allow Melbourne to run the most weather proof grand slam event in the world,'' he said in a statement.

"The Open is the biggest sporting event anywhere in the world for the month of January and is the largest annual event anywhere in the southern hemisphere,'' Brumby said in a statement.

"That's why the Victorian government is making this significant investment to keep this prestigious tournament in Victoria.''

Melbourne Park's contract to host the event expires in 2016 and there are fears it will then be vulnerable to cashed-up rivals in Asia and elsewhere seeking the prestige of staging a tennis major.

Shanghai, Dubai, Madrid and Sydney have all previously expressed keen interest in hosting the tournament.

"The world's best players love coming to Melbourne and our significant investment in Melbourne Park will guarantee the Australian Open remains in Melbourne until at least 2036,'' Mr Brumby added.

The Open has been played exclusively in Melbourne since 1972, moving from the grass courts of Kooyong to the purpose-built hardcourt venue at Melbourne Park in 1988.

Melbourne full-steam ahead on third roof project While Wimbledon prepares to begin its second edition next week with the new moveable roof on Centre court, the Australian Open is forging ahead with a project which will give Melbourne Park a third covered venue.

The 300-million-dollar redevelopment project was begun in early May, with progress going on through the Australian winter months. The Australian open will become the first of the four majors to boast three covered showcase courts.

The French and US Open remain subject to the whims of the weather, with the US event forced to play its last two finals on the third Monday due to heavy rain and no roof over the huge Ashe court.

The initial part of the Melbourne project will be a facelift for the existing Margaret Court Arena, the addition of a retractable roof and an upgrade to 7,500-seat capacity.

More than 21 new courts are planned for the two-decade-old riverside complex, first of the Grand Slam to feature a roof of any kind. The project is due to be finished in five years.
