Nadal to play Thailand tennis open

BANGKOK (AFP) - Spanish world number one Rafael Nadal will make his debut at the Thailand Open in September, the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) announced Thursday.

The sporting body said the six-times Grand Slam Champion would be joined by reigning tournament champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga competing for the top prize of 608,500 dollars.

"I am very pleased to finally be able to come and compete at the PTT Thailand Open. I look forward to playing some great tennis for all the Thai fans," Nadal said in a press release.

LTAT president Suwat Lipatapanlop said he hoped Nadal's fame would help bring attention to the Thai competition and boost the country's ailing economy.

"I hope that hosting a tennis tournament with a superstar will bring confidence to both fans and investors," Suwat told a news conference.

The Thailand Open will be held from September 26 until October 4 in the suburbs of Bangkok.

Remaining players for the 32-player draw will be announced in the next couple of months, the LTAT said.

Re: T39,T40: Bangkok, Pekin, Tokio, Kuala Lumpur 2009

Kuala Lumpur has returned to the ATP Asian calendar, with French Open finalist Robin Söderling announcing his participation in inadvertently dramatic fashion.

The Swede made a confirming telephone call or organisers which rang just as Malaysia's prime minister was speaking at the presentation ceremony in the capital.

The city is back on the circuit after a gap or more than a decade. In 1995 Chile's Marcelo Rios won the indoor event.

The tournament from September 28 also boasts No. 8 and Australian Open semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco and Chile's No. 10 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile. It will be held the same week as the Thailand Open with Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, one hour's flight away in Bangkok.

Also playing: Nikolay Davydenko, Spain's David Ferrer and Japanese number one Kei Nishikori, currently out with an elbow injury.

The Malaysian Open will be held at the 16,000-seat Putra Stadium in the capital. It is the fifth of the autumn Asian swing and will double-up with the Thailand Open, held the same week. Events in Tokyo and Beijing and the Shanghai Masters 1000 follow.

"There is great demand for cities to host ATP events and in particular within the Asian region," said ATP International head Brad Drewett. "Asian tennis fans have demonstrated that they are among the best in the world and we are excited that tennis fans across Malaysia now have the opportunity to see some of the world's best players battling it out in the heart of Kuala Lumpur".

Re: T39,T40: Bangkok, Pekin, Tokio, Kuala Lumpur 2009

Kuala Lumpur Confirmed As Newest Stop On ATP World Tour

The ATP World Tour’s strengthened fall Asian swing will begin in South-East Asia after the governing body of men’s professional tennis today confirmed that Kuala Lumpur will host an ATP World Tour-level tournament.

The tournament was officially launched by Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and will be known as the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur. The ATP World Tour 250 event will be held indoors at the 16,000-seat Putra Stadium at the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex, commencing on Monday 28 September.

“There is great demand for cities to host ATP World Tour events and in particular within the Asian region. Kuala Lumpur presented a very strong application to become part of the ATP World Tour. This, combined with their excellent tournament facilities, management team and the support of the Malaysian Government, we are confident that Kuala Lumpur is the right venue to continue developing tennis within South-East Asia,” said Brad Drewett, CEO, ATP International.

“Asian tennis fans have demonstrated that they are among the best in the world and we are excited that tennis fans across Malaysia now have the opportunity to see some of the world’s best players battling it out in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.”

The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, supported by the Government of Malaysia, will be organized by leading international management company IMG and headed by Tournament Director Nick Freyer, Senior Vice President IMG and Head of Tennis, Asia.

“I warmly thank the Prime Minister for his belief and support of this project from the very start, to all those people, many of whose contributions remain private but deeply appreciated, people whose advice and counsel was invaluable and who worked so many hours during the bid process and more recently during the event launch phase,” said Nick Freyer.

“Our great appreciation extends to the ATP World Tour Board and Brad Drewett for the support and trust they showed in us and to our friends at the Putra Stadium and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for their confidence and contributions, the Ministries of Sport and Tourism, the National Sports Council and of course to the ATP World Tour players who have so readily accepted the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur as a tournament to play and be part of.”

The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, will be one of five events in the strengthened Asian swing, that will culminate with the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 presented by Rolex.
