Z dwóch lat do dwóch i pół miesiąca władze antydopingowe skróciły dyskwalifikację Richarda Gasqueta za doping, bo dały wiarę, że kokaina dostała się do jego organizmu przez... pocałunki z tajemniczą Pamelą. Ale to nie koniec. Pamela skarży go o zniesławienie.

To chyba najbardziej kuriozalna historia dopingowa ostatnich lat.

Gasqueta, były numer siedem na świecie, którego talent porównywany był nawet do Rogera Federera, przyłapano na dopingu podczas marcowego turnieju w Miami. W jego organizmie wykryto kokainę. Sprawa wyszła na światło dzienne po artykułach "L'Equipe". 23-letni Francuz dostał w maju wstępny dwuletni zakaz gry w tenisa. Nie wystąpił ani we French Open, ani w Wimbledonie.

Odwołał się do niezależnego trybunału Międzynarodowej Federacji Tenisowej (ITF) w Londynie.

Według jego wersji, w dniu, w którym wiedział już, że wycofa się z turnieju w Miami przez kontuzję ramienia, wybrał się do restauracji ze swoim trenerem Guillaume'em Peyre'em i przyjacielem Thierrym Championem. Panowie pili alkohol i postanowili zaprzyjaźnić się z czterema atrakcyjnymi kobietami, które siedziały przy sąsiednim stoliku. Wśród nich była m.in. "co najmniej siedmioma francuskimi pocałunkami, z których każdy trwał od pięciu do dziesięciu sekund". Po godz. 4.15 nad ranem zabawa przeniosła się do klubu ze striptizem Goldrush. Tam Pamela, według relacji Gasqueta, spędziła podejrzanie dużo czasu w toalecie, a potem na do widzenia dała mu kolejny długi pocałunek.

Gasquet wrócił do hotelu, poszedł spać, a rano stawił się na kortach, by oficjalnie wycofać się z turnieju. To właśnie wtedy pobrano od niego próbkę moczu, w której wykryto później śladowe ilości kokainy.

Werdykt trybunału odwoławczego, który zapadł w połowie lipca, wprawiał w osłupienie. "Dajemy wiarę wyjaśnieniom pana Gasqueta, że kokaina znalazła się w jego organizmie nieświadomie poprzez intymny kontakt z inną osobą". Tłumaczenie, że przyjął narkotyk z ust Pameli uznano za wiarygodne, bo chodziło o kilka miligramów. "Gdyby badanie przeprowadzono kilka godzin później, nie byłoby już śladu po narkotyku" - stwierdzili eksperci.

Gasquet został jedynie skrytykowany za to, że powinien lepiej dobierać sobie miejsca, gdzie spędza wolny czas. Oba kluby w Miami od dawna kojarzone są z narkotykami. Karę dwóch lat skrócono mu do dwóch i pół miesiąca. Oznacza to, że może zagrać już 9 sierpnia w Montrealu.

ITF (trybunał ITF to inne ciało, nie podlega federacji) i Międzynarodowa Agencja Antydopingowa (WADA) ostro zaprotestowały. Materiał dowodowy uznały za czystą spekulację. Przypadek Gasqueta może prowadzić teraz do niebezpiecznej furtki dla innych sportowców przyłapanych na zażywaniu kokainy lub marihuany. Winę zawsze można zwalić na pocałunki, słabą wentylację, pomylone kieliszki etc.

Wielu kibiców było jeszcze bardziej dosadnych. "Gasquet wywinął się tylko dzięki wsparciu potężnej francuskiej federacji, która naciskała na skrócenie kary" - napisał jeden z nich w internecie. W 2007 r. Martina Hingis też została przyłapana na obecności kokainy w organizmie. Ilość narkotyku też była śladowa, a Szwajcarka twierdziła, że jest niewinna. Kary nie cofnięto, choć Hingis nie zdecydowała się wtedy na odwołanie. Po prostu skończyła karierę.

Gasquet nie może się jednak jeszcze czuć bezpieczny, bo na scenę wkroczyła Pamela, która pozwała kilka dni temu tenisistę do sądu. Twierdzi, że została zniesławiona. "Nie biorę narkotyków i nie jestem żadną łatwą dziewczyną, która piszczy na widok gwiazdy tenisa" - napisała w oświadczeniu. Przyznała, że całowała się z Gasquetem, ale na pewno nie siedem razy i to Francuz miał inicjatywę. "Dawałam mu do zrozumienia, że nie jest w moim typie" - podkreśliła.

- Kokaina w pocałunku? Ludzie, to jest wariactwo! W normalnym sądzie takie dowody zostałyby wyśmiane - stwierdził Yassine Bouzrou, prawnik Pameli.

We francuskim sądzie prawnicy Gasqueta będą musieli wykazać, że Pamela brała narkotyki w klubie. Na razie nikt nie wie, co zrobi ITF, jeśli cywilny sąd przyzna rację kobiecie. Ale najbardziej prawdopodobna jest ugoda, czyli odszkodowanie dla Pameli i zielone światło do gry dla Gasqueta.

The presence of Richard Gasquet in the men’s singles at this US Open is a potent reminder to all its participants that nothing can be taken for granted. Andy Murray looked at a PowerBar in a local pharmacy last week, but even though he was peckish he dared not try it, just in case it contained something that might tarnish his career. Murray empathises with his plight. The two are not particularly close — Gasquet has always been something of a loner — but seeing a fellow professional go through such a trial sits uncomfortably with the world No 2. And it underscores the need for vigilance when it comes to what you put into your mouth.

“You never know,” Murray, last year’s finalist, said. “Even when it comes to vitamin supplements you’ve just got to be careful. We don’t have any sort of body that sanctions vitamins or supplements for the players, which would help and make a big difference. To play five hours in the heat you can get here, you really should take something. I don’t think it’s healthy to endure that and not have a supplement that can help you recover.

“I can’t be more careful than I am now. I just don’t take anything because if something like that happened, it’s with you for the rest of your career. As far as Richard is concerned, he should be allowed to play here because, so far, he’s not been found guilty of anything. He doesn’t deserve to drop further down the rankings because of something accidental or which just didn’t happen.”

Gasquet against Nadal will receive as much attention for the Frenchman’s demeanour as the flexibility and strength in the Spaniard’s knees. No one can know for sure how they will stand up to the test. The hard courts are punishing in nature and the scheduling often mind-blowing.

Court to announce verdict on Gasquet in December

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)—French tennis player Richard Gasquet will learn within a month if he has been banned after testing positive for cocaine.

Gasquet told the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday that he failed a drug test in March because he kissed a woman in a nightclub who contaminated him with cocaine.

He was suspended for 2 1/2 months, but the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation appealed to CAS to give him a doping ban of at least one year.

CAS secretary-general Matthieu Reeb said a verdict is expected in early December.

“Everything went as expected and Richard Gasquet has, of course, had his chance to speak,” Reeb said after the seven-hour hearing.

“Now the arbitrators will begin their deliberations, which are going to take around three to four weeks until a final judgment will be communicated to the parties.”

That would allow Gasquet, who was suspended for the French Open and Wimbledon, to prepare for the Australian Open in January if he is cleared by the CAS panel of three lawyers.

“That is part of their considerations,” Reeb told The Associated Press.

Gasquet declined to speak as he left court. While lawyers for the ITF described the process as “very good and very fair.”

The 23-year-old Gasquet tested positive the day after pulling out of the Miami Masters with a shoulder injury. Cocaine is classed as a stimulant if an athlete uses it during competition.

In evidence to an independent tribunal called by the ITF in July, Gasquet said he visited a club in Miami that night and met a woman identified only as “Pamela,” who he kissed several times.

The tribunal panel accepted that he was “contaminated with cocaine” by the woman and not to blame for the positive test, describing Gasquet as “shy and reserved, honest and truthful” and clearing him to resume playing immediately.

WADA and the ITF believed he should be held to the strictest standards of the WADA Code—which makes athletes responsible for any substance found in their body—and denied the defense of “no significant fault or negligence.”

Gasquet’s ranking peaked at No. 7 after he reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2007. It dropped to No. 23 when his failed test was announced in April. He’s currently ranked No. 53.

CAS clears Gasquet of drug charges

GENEVA (AP) -French tennis player Richard Gasquet was cleared of any wrongdoing Thursday when the Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted his claim that he tested positive for cocaine by kissing a woman in a nightclub.

The CAS dismissed appeals by the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation, which wanted Gasquet banned for up to two years.

The court in Lausanne accepted Gasquet's claim that he inadvertently consumed cocaine by kissing the woman in a Miami club hours after withdrawing injured from a tournament in March.

``It was impossible for the player, even when exercising the utmost caution, to know that in kissing a woman who he had met in a totally unsuspicious environment, he could be contaminated with cocaine,'' the court said in a statement.

A CAS panel of three lawyers said the quantity of the drug in Gasquet's urine test was ``minute'' and the 23-year-old Frenchman was ``clearly not a regular cocaine user.''

``The possibility of contamination became the most plausible explanation,'' CAS said.

The verdict was greeted with dismay by WADA and the ITF, the sport's world governing body.

``WADA considered that the evidence warranted full and total scrutiny,'' director-general David Howman said in a statement. ``WADA abides by the CAS ruling and has no further comment at this stage.''

ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti said the federation was ``disappointed'' with the court's ruling.

``The ITF also recognizes the potential implications of the CAS decision with respect to future decisions and will discuss these with WADA,'' he said.

The 23-year-old Gasquet served a 2 1/2-month suspension before an independent ITF tribunal cleared him to resume his career in July.

It ruled he was not to blame because the woman - identified only as ``Pamela'' - contaminated him with cocaine hours before the drug test.

CAS said that ban should not count as a doping offense on Gasquet's record, even though he had not appealed against it.

Athletes who commit two doping offenses face a life ban from their sport.

WADA and the ITF appealed to CAS because they believed Gasquet should be held to the strictest standards of the WADA Code, which makes athletes responsible for any substance found in their body.

They tried to deny him the defense of ``no significant fault or negligence'' for the drug being present.

Gasquet gave evidence at the appeal, which was heard over seven hours at CAS headquarters on Nov. 10.

The CAS panel found he ``had not committed any fault or negligence within the meaning of the ITF anti-doping program.''

In his defense, Gasquet said he went to the nightclub with friends to see a French DJ perform after pulling out of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne with a shoulder injury. He met ``Pamela'' there and kissed her several times.

The court said both parties' experts ``agreed that the minute amount of cocaine could have been transferred in this manner.''

Gasquet can now prepare for the Australian Open in January. He missed the French Open and Wimbledon while suspended, and in his first main-draw match after returning lost in straight sets to top-seeded Rafael Nadal at the U.S. Open.

He is ranked No. 52 in the year-end ATP standings after being No. 23 when his failed test was announced in April.

Gasquet's ranking peaked at No. 7 in July 2007 after he reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, where he lost to Roger Federer. He has earned more than $4.2 million in career prize money, according to the ATP.

Trybunał Arbitrażowy ds. Sportu w Lozannie oczyścił francuskiego tenisistę Richarda Gasqueta z zarzutu stosowania kokainy.

Trybunał nie zaprzeczył, że 28 marca podczas turnieju ATP w Miami wykryto w moczu Gasqueta minimalną ilość kokainy, ale uznał, że "nie wynikało to z błędu czy z zaniedbania zawodnika". Na podstawie opinii ekspertów sędziowie doszli nawet do wniosku, że narkotyk mógł dostać się do organizmu tenisisty przypadkowo.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -Richard Gasquet exhaled deeply and stuck out his tongue, relieved that he could finally start scrutinizing a victory on court rather than one in court.

The 23-year-old Frenchman had a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen on Monday in the first round of the Brisbane International, his first tournament since a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport took the uncertainty out of his immediate career.

Gasquet said the victory was important to help clear his mind after months of turmoil that started when a doping test last March showed traces of cocaine.

``It is just good for me to play with nothing in the head,'' said Gasquet, a semifinalist in Brisbane last year. ``It was most important I could play relaxed.''

The CAS last month rejected an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation against an earlier decision to clear Gasquet of the doping violation.

A panel of three lawyers from the Lausanne-based CAS accepted Gasquet's claim that he inadvertently consumed cocaine by kissing a woman in a Miami club hours after withdrawing from a tournament with an injury.
