Australian Open trophy could be anyone's

IT'S the wide-open Australian Open. That's the frank assessment from a group of the top contenders when the race for the first grand slam crown starts next week.

Experienced German Tommy Haas, who is heading into his 15th year on tour, reckons it could be "the most exciting one for a while".

"There's a lot of great players out there. Some players who are not seeded are dangerous and maybe have a great chance. It should be a very exciting Australian Open this year, that's for sure," Haas said.

While world No. 1 Roger Federer and defending champion Rafael Nadal are seeded to meet in the final again, the chasing pack, led by 2008 titleholder Novak Djokovic, US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro, Scot Andy Murray, American Andy Roddick and in-form Russian Nikolay Davydenko, is closing fast.

Djokovic said yesterday the narrowing gap was a combination of everyone being fresh and fit for Melbourne and the collective belief from Davydenko's wins against Federer and Nadal in Doha last week.

"It's a little bit of both. The players gain a lot of confidence. Davydenko is under-talked and under-estimated. He's in the best shape of his career and he's able to win a grand slam (title)," the world No. 3 said.

"Then you have Del Potro, who has already won a grand slam, Murray, who has amazing ability and who's yet to win a grand slam. They're all great contesters, great players, and it's going to be very exciting.

"I think the top of the men's tennis has more players that are able to win the grand slams and big events. In the last couple of years, it was only Roger and Rafa, and maybe Roddick. Right now, that's a much bigger group, definitely."

While Croatian Ivan Ljubicic nominated Federer as the favourite, he pointed out that recent Open history was littered with surprise finalists, such as Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who shot to prominence two years ago.

"It's probably the grand slam where the surprises are coming most," Ljubicic said. "For the underdogs, it's probably the one that gives you the most hope to do well."
