Austrian Open dropped from ATP tour calendar

VIENNA (AP)—The Austrian Open—a 65-year-old clay-court tournament—has been dropped from the ATP World Tour calendar after a legal dispute with local authorities over the tennis stadium in Kitzbuehel.

The ATP said Friday that the tournament rights have now been moved to Nice, France, for at least the next five seasons.

According to tournament director Ronnie Leitgeb, the local city council of Kitzbuehel refused to sign an agreement on the terms of use of the stadium.

Leitgeb, who also manages Nikolay Davydenko and Jurgen Melzer, said a main sponsor for the tournament had already been found.

The traditional event in Kitzbuehel has been won by players like Pete Sampras, Thomas Muster, Goran Ivanisevic and Juan Martin del Potro.

It’s the second tournament in Austria in as many years to disappear from the calender after Poertschach was dropped last year. The BA Tennis Trophy in Vienna remains the country’s only event on the ATP World Tour.

Tak więc sprawa jest przesądzona ,turniej w Kitzbuhel przechodzi do historii na przynajmniej najbliższe 5 lat. Od 2010 roku w jego miejsce wchodzi turniej w Nicea którego ostatnia edycja była w roku 1995.Trochę szkoda bo zostanie już tylko jesienny turniej w Wiedniu jeśli chodzi o Austrię..

Nice to Host New ATP World Tour Tournament In 2010; Replaces Kitzbuhel

The ATP announced today a change in the 2010 ATP World Tour calendar with a tournament in Nice (France) replacing Kitzbuehel (Austria), the week of 17 May. The ATP World Tour 250 event will be played on the clay courts of the Nice Lawn Tennis Club the week prior to Roland Garros.

The Nice event becomes the fifth ATP World Tour event in France after Marseille, Metz, Lyon and Paris. Nice had held an ATP World Tour event for several years until 1995.

"We are delighted to announce the new event in Nice," said Laurent Delanney, ATP Chief Executive Officer - Europe. "Nice staged a popular ATP World Tour event for many years and it is great to be able to return there after a 15 year absence. Tennis has a huge following in France and many French players compete at the highest level on the ATP World Tour."

Serbia To Defend Dusseldorf Title

Serbia is the first country to confirm its participation at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship, which will take place at the Dusseldorf Rochusclub on 16-22 May, 2010.

Representing the defending champion will be Viktor Troicki, Janko Tipsarevic and Nenad Zimonjic - the three players who defeated Germany in last year’s final to win the title for Serbia for a third time.

Speaking at the Australian Open, where he will contest the doubles final with Canadian partner Daniel Nestor on Saturday, Zimonjic said: “I’m really looking forward to playing in Dusseldorf. We want to defend our title.”

Tipsarevic and Troicki also spoke highly of the tournament. “There’s a very special and unique atmosphere during the ARAG ATP World Team Championship at the Dusseldorf Rochusclub,” said World No. 36 Tipsarevic. “Our World Championship title was really celebrated back home in Serbia and this is why we are ready to launch into action in order to defend our title successfully.”

“The week in Dusseldorf was simply fantastic,” added the No. 30-ranked Troicki. “The victory at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship last year was a truly awesome experience. Of course we’ll be back and of course we’ll fight hard for the title.”

W niezła obsadę mierzą organizatorzy turnieju w Nicei. Termin średni, bo tuż przed turniejem WS, ale przewijają się naprawdę niezłe nazwiska. Caujolle powiedział wczoraj w Marsylii, że Davydenko, Soderling, Verdasco i Monfils chcą wziąć udział w nicejskiej imprezie. Trwają rozmowy z Simonem, Hewittem i Gonzalezem.

Przepraszam, czy Verdasco jest normalny? Przeciez facet ledwo czlapie po korcie, w zasadzie ten Madryt to mogl sobie odpuscic, a on startuje w jakims marginalnym turnieju.
To samo tyczy sie Soderlinga, z mojego punktu widzenia jakies kuriozalne decyzje obu graczy, by tutaj wystapic.
