Re: T44: Bazylea, Walencja 2010

Davidoff wycofuje się ze sponsorowania turnieju w Basel.

Swiss Indoors forced to drop tobacco sponsor

One of world sport's last tobacco sponsorships is ending, at the Swiss Indoors tennis event in Roger Federer's hometown Basel.
Tournament organizers say the 2010 event in November is the last of a 17-year partnership with tobacco brand Davidoff.

Swiss Indoors said in a statement that the ATP World Tour told the tournament in June the existing sponsorship could not be extended because of worldwide laws restricting tobacco advertising on television.

The tournament was promoted in status last year to an ATP 500 event, giving the tour central control over television rights.

The 2009 Swiss Indoors was therefore broadcast in 150 countries and had a six-fold increase in ratings, although the sponsor's name was dropped during transmissions.

Re: T44: Bazylea, Walencja 2010

Jubilee fever at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel

The eyes of the tennis world turn to Basel

In the ephemeral world of sport, monumental events like the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel are a rarity and an expression of quality. One year on from its inclusion in the premium class of the ATP World Tour 500 events, the world’s third largest indoor tournament is celebrating its 40th jubilee with an outstanding show, which will have tennis fans all over the world looking forward to Basel with great anticipation. This year’s field will be headed by the sublime Roger Federer (ATP 1), the Serbian title holder Novak Djokovic (ATP 2) and America’s great comeback-king Andy Roddick (ATP 7), three absolute superstars.

Federer seeking yet another record in Basel

One notable feature of the 40 years of world class tennis played in Basel (1970 to 2010) is the fact that every Number 1 in the world has written a page in tennis history in Basel. ‘Basel - the Name of the Game’ is an expression commonly heard on the tennis circuit. The 16-time Grand-Slam winner Roger Federer continues to make a considerable contribution towards holding the tournament’s leading position in its competition against the world’s great cities. The Swiss sportsman of the century is aiming for yet another record, as he attempts to become the first professional in the Open era to win in Basel for the fourth time.

Djokovic – a Joker in a class of his own

Novak Djokovic, also known as the ‘Joker’, has been occupying the second place, for the first time, in the ranking since the beginning of February. As a result we may this autumn have a rerun of last year’s dream final between the world’s numbers 1 and 2. This year the Serbian player has already won the title in Dubai on a hard court surface. A significant exploit in one of the majors would allow the right-hander to muscle into the battle for the top spot at any time as the season progresses. His coup of last year in beating Federer in front of his home crowd greatly boosted Djokovic’s self-confidence as he put the brakes on the Federer Express over three sets.

Roddick – back again after a seven-year break

After a break of seven years, the public will be treated to another chance to see America’s mature comeback-king Andy Roddick. The ace-machine with his cannonball service will be making his appearance under his new coach, Larry Stefanki, eight kilos lighter and correspondingly more successful, after treating himself to a physical course of fresh cell therapy. In Indian Wells Roddick stormed his way into the final, and then went on to take the title two weeks later in Miami at the Players Championships in Florida. The American has fond memories of Basel where he lost to a certain Roger Federer at the quarter-final stage in both 2001 and 2002. In 2003 the Texas star progressed to the semi finals, before being eliminated by the Argentinian David Nalbandian.

Super Monday with Roger Federer and opera star Paul Potts

The main tournament’s opening day will be heralded with trumpets and drums. Super Monday in the St. Jakobshalle has become something of a tradition, with sporting skills and musical artistry coming together to create an exclusive mix in the course of the festive opening ceremony. On 1 November 2010 (All Saints’ Day), top seed Roger Federer will be missing out on his day off and begin his stint at 6.30 p.m. Before that, at 5.30 p.m., the arena will resound to opera music. The new Welsh Pavarotti is coming over from Britain; the public will be entranced by the magical voice of Paul Potts with his world-famous Puccini arias, amongst other things. The special guest will be accompanied by more than 100 participants from the operatic choir of Theater Basel, the city’s municipal theatre, and the Basel Festival Orchestra.

Switzerland’s first tennis cinema

In their role as a national sporting and social highlight, the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel makes every effort to offer its public the best possible services, for example in the Experience World Foyer with its 70 stands, and a varied range of culinary offerings. An extra element of entertainment and emotion is provided by the Manor Cinema in the entrance area of the foyer. Thanks to SF / Schweizer Fernsehen (Swiss Television) there will be an upbeat review in picture and sound recalling the highlights and milestones of the 40 years of Basel’s tennis history. This journey back through time lasts 11 minutes and is free of charge for all visitors.

Re: T44: Bazylea, Walencja 2010

Line-up in the tournament's 40-year history. The eyes of the tennis world turn to Basel

The Davidoff Swiss Indoors, the third largest indoor tennis tournament in the world, is celebrating its 40th jubilee with an impressive display, which will have tennis fans all over the world fixing their eyes on Basel with great anticipation. With a unique line-up, including four men from the world’s top ten and 25 from the top 49, the tennis tournament in Basel will be presenting the best field in its 40-year history. The entry list is headed by the Serb Novak Djokovic (ATP 2), followed by Roger Federer (ATP 3), Tomas Berdych (ATP 7) and Andy Roddick (ATP 10). If entry lists were works of art, experts would describe the world-class field due to appear in Basel as a Picasso. Players ranked outside the top 49 run the risk of having to start off in the qualifying rounds. This is as a result of the continuous development work which has been carried out over the past four decades, and also of the changes that have been made to the tour, which saw the Basel tournament promoted to the ATP World Tour 500 series last year. The Davidoff Swiss Indoors is also the best test of form before the ATP Tour World Finals in London, making it the hotspot of the tennis world.

Explosive mix in the main draw

The draw has produced an explosive mix, with high-calibre champions, this season’s up-and-coming talents or professionals who are in good shape this autumn. Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer won’t face each other until the final, in a potential return match of the US Open semi-final in which the Swiss player allowed two match points to slip out of his grasp. Basel-born Federer is aiming to achieve another record in his home town by becoming the first player to win the tournament four times. There are two other top-ten players to keep a close eye on; the Czech Tomas Berdych who beat Federer on his way to the final at Wimbledon, and the American Andy Roddick who is not to be underestimated as he works his way back up to top form after a spell on the sidelines with glandular fever. Roddick is returning to play in Basel for the first time in seven years.

John Isner – the world record holder is on his way

World records are rare in tennis, but the name of the American player John Isner (ATP 23) will go down in history. At this year’s Wimbledon championships, he won his encounter with the Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in 11 hours and five minutes with a phenomenal score of 70:68 games in the final set, making this the longest match in history. Isner hit no less than 112 aces throughout the match. America’s entire tennis elite is due to come together in Basel; along with Roddick and Isner, Mardy Fish (ATP 19), who is looking as strong as ever, and the three-times season tournament winner Sam Querrey (ATP 21) will complete the set.

Showdown for the Davis Cup

The players’ run-up to Basel also reflects the course of this year’s Davis Cup, the final of which between Serbia and France could also be played out on Swiss soil. Leader Novak Djokovic (ATP 2) will be joined by his teammates Janko Tipsarevic (ATP 34) and Viktor Troicki (ATP 47), while the French team will be represented by Richard Gasquet (ATP 30) and Michael Llodra (ATP 28), who is enjoying a career high and is currently arguably the best left-hander in the game after Nadal.

Stars in abundance

Basel buffs up its shining reputation each year by presenting a selection of new tennis stars. Among these are the Latvian Ernests Gulbis (ATP 25), who will be playing in the St. Jakobshalle for the first time, and the energetic Kazakh Andrei Golubev (ATP 39). Swiss tennis fans will also be relishing another chance to see Marcos Baghdatis (ATP 18), the fans’ favourite from Cyprus, who reached the 2005 final in Basel as a qualifier. The name David Nalbandian (ATP 29) will provoke mixed feelings among the competition; the 2005 world champion from Argentina has recovered from hip surgery and recently stole the show in Washington with a title victory. Meanwhile the Austrian Jürgen Melzer (ATP 13), the new Mozart of the tennis world, is playing better than ever.

Basel spectacle on TV screens worldwide

The top-quality field in Basel will also push broadcasting coverage to new heights. Elevation to the World Tour 500 triggered a quantum leap for the tournament. The substantial level of TV coverage seen in previous years was blown apart completely last year with a total of 1,131 televised hours in over 180 countries throughout the world, and with more than 75 million viewers. In North America alone, Basel filled television screens for 46 hours – a first for Swiss sport. The producer SF, Schweizer Fernsehen (Swiss Television) ensures international TV transmission in the highest quality resolution from the very first day of the main tournament.

Super Monday with Roger Federer and the magical voice of Paul Potts

The opening day of the main tournament will be heralded with a fanfare. On Super Monday, sporting skills and musical artistry come together to form an exclusive mix in the course of the celebratory opening ceremony. Roger Federer will begin his stint at 6.30 pm on 1 November 2010. Before that, at 5.30 pm, the arena will echo to the sound of opera. The new Welsh Pavarotti is coming over from Britain; the public will be entranced by the magical voice of Paul Potts as he performs works including his world-famous Puccini arias. The star guest will be accompanied by more than 100 participants from the operatic choir of the Theater Basel and the Basel Festival Orchestra.
