Re: Mark Phillippoussis

Philippoussis comeback start fizzles after 3 years away

Philippoussis comeback start fizzles after 3 years away Mark Philipoussis managed 12 aces in yet another comeback to tennis, But the effort at a minor Challenger event in Dallas still resulted in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to 161st-ranked American Michael Yani.

The match was the first at the Tour level for the former Wimbledon and US Open finalist since a Challenger in Hawaii in November, 2006. The 33 year-old played in the Hopman Cup in early 2007, but suffered another in his never-ending run of knee injuries - now totaling three operations per side.

One-time No. 8 Philippoussis is somehow hoping against the odds to get back into the game at the ATP level. "I'm a long way away from that happening, but that's what I'm working toward."

Philippoussis has dropped a few kilograms in recent attempts to ease strain on his knees, now weighing 93 kg, four down from his former playing weight. "It's all physical for me, the hitting part was never the problem," he told Australian media. "I have to be as physically fit and strong as I am capable of being.''

Re: Mark Phillippoussis

Bride-to-be says Philippousis wedding plans rescheduled

The complex personal life of two-time Grand Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis just got a lot more complicated as the 33-year-old's planned wedding to a minor American actress has apparently been pushed back.

The US-based one-time player whose career fade was one of the most dramatic in the sport - not helped by six knee surgeries - has made more headlines in recent years for his off-court troubles, which have included his Melbourne home being threatened over unpaid mortgage debt.

Now, the presumed marriage between the Australian and actress Jennifer Esposito is on hold after originally being planned for the summer in the upscale Hamptons east of New York City.

"We haven't set a date," Esposito told the Australian women's magazine New Idea. "We're just trying to get through every day as a couple."

"We're enjoying ourselves, and a wedding takes time and planning. Mark has got to focus on his tennis."

Despite losing US Open and Wimbledon finals, Philippoussis last set foot on an ATP court in late 2006. He made a try at a comeback a month ago at a Challenger in Dallas, losing his first match.

But that is of little concern to the prospective bride: "I believe in him 100 per cent. Mark's heart is in the right place with me and I'm there for him."

Philippoussis has seemed unlucky in love, being linked in the past to girlfriends including Aussie singer Delta Goodrem, Paris Hilton, former player Anna Kournikova and actress/party girl Tara Reid.
He was engaged to teenaged Miami heiress Alexis Barbara in 2006 but broke it off.

Re: Mark Phillippoussis

Karierę zakończył z powodu operacji kolana w 2006 roku.W trzech rozegranych turniejach Champions Series 34-letni dziś Australijczyk Philippoussis, ex ósma rakieta świata oraz finalista US Open (1998) i Wimbledonu (2003), zdobył dwa tytuły, a trzeci przegrał w finale.

Re: Mark Phillippoussis

Mark Philippoussis serve a warning

TRIPLE Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick believes Mark Philippoussis is capable of a successful return to the ATP tour.

Philippoussis, 34 last week, has not played on the tour since 2006, but recent success in Champions Series events has encouraged the Victorian to consider his future.

The dual grand slam runner-up's revived ambitions have been backed by world No.8 Roddick, who practised with the Australian in September.

"There's no question he could come out and win some matches," Roddick said from Paris.

"It's just a matter of if he could stay healthy - and that's the big if.

"He's certainly capable. He said he hadn't served in a couple of months and he came out (to practice) and was just bombing serves. So, as long as he has that weapon, he's gonna be not fun to play.

"I think he's hitting great."

Roddick said he practised with Philippoussis and coach Larry Stefanki in California.

"I was going out to work with Larry in San Diego, Mark and I have always been friendly," he said.

"I asked him if he was up for hitting some balls - I didn't know if he was or not. He came out for four or five days in a row and he was hitting it well.

"With 'Flip', it's not about whether he can play, it's about whether he can play and stay healthy.

"He seems optimistic.

"I think he had a lot of fun during those four or five days.

"We were working pretty hard, so who knows? We'll see."

Roddick is the second American grand slam winner to predict Philippoussis could succeed if he tried to return to the regular circuit.

Jim Courier, also a former world No.1, said Philippoussis could "play with anybody" after the dual Davis Cup winner claimed the Champions Series final in Arizona last month.

"When Mark plays well and he plays that first strike tennis, he can play with anybody," Courier said.

"The question is can his body hold up to the rigours of the tour on a day-to-day basis?

"All of us who are in this sport can appreciate the racquet skills he brings to the table."

Philippoussis last played on the ATP World Tour in 2006 and first played on the Champions Series in 2007 after recovering from right knee surgery.

Philippoussis has had six knee operations - three on the right knee and three on the left - but this year is finally starting to feel at full strength.

And the monstrous serve remains lethal, according to Courier.

"I needed a stepladder because his second serves were so high," Courier said after losing the Arizona final.

Re: Mark Phillippoussis

Philippoussis dreams of return to ATP

The impossible dream of one-time Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis is back, with the right-hander who played his last ATP match in 2006 advising that he's seriously considering a return to the regular tour.

For the former tennis playboy, his recent title success at a senior event - he beat American Davis Cup coach Jim Courier, a four-time Grand Slam winner - was enough to convince him he still has the game to play as a pro.

"I've just fallen back in love with the sport on the Champions Series,” Philippoussis said after his October senior moment. Sources tell Melbourne's Sun-Herald that the Aussie who has declared bankrupt recently after failing to pay a Melbourne home mortgage is now keen to get back onto the ATP.

But the big comeback plans do not include a run at qualifying for next month's Australian Open, but instead hinge on Wimbledon, where Philipoussis lost the 2003 final to Roger Federer. "His mentality and approach is quite different to what it has been in the past," the newspaper quoted a source as saying. "He's matured and realises he never fulfilled his potential. He is very dedicated at the moment. He is adamant that he still has something to prove to people."

The Philippoussis career was ended as much by a lack of work ethic as it was by the results of six knee surgeries on both knees. Since the end of his regular career, luck has not been with the ladies man, who has been saddled with both romantic and financial problems.

Philippoussis is apparently also taking heart after kind words from Andy Roddick following a training session several months ago. "There's no question he could come out and win some matches," said Roddick, another Wimbledon finals victim of Federer. "It's just a matter of if he could stay healthy – and that's the big if. He's certainly capable."

And Courier, 40, only added fuel to the speculation when he said that Philippoussis "can play with anybody."

Re: Mark Phillippoussis

Philippoussis eyes another shot at the ATP

http://www.tennistalk.com/images/article/642.jpg

Ever optimistic Mark Philippoussis is hoping against the odds to parlay this week's senior title from Florida into a possible return to the ATP.

The Australian, who has not played competed regularly since 2005 and has undegone six knee operations, still somehow believes he can play at the elite level.

"Being out here brought back that spark of wanting to compete," said Aussie, twice a Grand Slam finalist. "I've started thinking of (the matches) as stepping stones to get my body in shape and work on my game. It's like, 'Why not? Let's make another run at it?' "

Philippoussis won 11 singles titles at the peak of his powers, but never applied the modern work ethic to his game in what many believe was a shocking waste of talent. The one-time No. 8 who earned $7 million in career prize money has also suffered financial problems.

That's all been put in the past now. "I'll have a different mind-set," Philippoussis said. "My goals will be different. It'd be a matter of going out there and enjoying every day and every match for what it is. I'd say that's a good attitude to have about life."
