Re: Michael Llodra

Wimbledon 2010 - wywiad po porażce w 2 rundzie

Q. You started off really well, and then he seemed to take over. Do you think that was more him changing his game or something that you did?

MICHAEL LLODRA: I don't know. I have chances in the beginning of the second set with two breakpoints. It's not easy, but, you know, I think I can break him.

After it change all ‑‑ not all the match, but his confidence was totally down after losing the first set. And beginning of the first set, the first game two breakpoints. So it's tough, because I think I made it, you know, after it change a lot.

After I have couple also breakpoints in the beginning of the third, and finally he break me. After, it was tough for me to come back.

In the fourth, you know, I have not so many chances. But I miss a couple points at Love‑15 and 15‑All. Can make the difference in this set. After the tiebreak, you know, you never know.

No, it was a good match. But I think I miss a couple points, you know, to make the difference.

Q. How is a grass playing on Centre Court? Is it fairly slow or quick?

MICHAEL LLODRA: No, it's slow. It's not quick like usual. But, you know, it's not the question today, you know, if it's fast or slow.

I mean, couple years ago it was faster for sure.

Q. Is there a big difference between grass on Centre and the grass on the outside courts?

MICHAEL LLODRA: No.

Q. About the same? They're all kind of slow?

MICHAEL LLODRA: Yeah, around the same.

Re: Michael Llodra

US Open, postać 3. dnia: Michaël Llodra

Francuzem w wieku 13 i 14 lat zajmował się George Deniau, trener Guya Forget i Jakoba Hlaska i to on przyswoił mu taktykę serwis i wolej. W karierze juniorskiej Llodra osiągnął deblowy półfinał US Open 1997 i Wimbledonu 1998.

Największe sukcesy w karierze osiągnął jednak w grze podwójnej, w parze z Fabricem Santoro wygrał Australian Open 2003 i 2004 oraz Masters Cup 2005, a wspólnie z Arnaudem Clémentem triumfował podczas Wimbledonu 2007.

Re: Michael Llodra

Strong Net Play to Match His Sense of Humor

Michael Llodra’s originality is not restricted to his style of play. This, after all, is the same French player who decided to stuff himself into Ivan Ljubicic’s locker completely nude in 2005 in an attempt, so he explained, to capture the good vibrations that Ljubicic was generating by winning so many matches.

It should come as no surprise that Ljubicic was in for quite a surprise when he opened his locker door that spring in Miami.

“He was looking at me, I was looking at him,” Ljubicic said. “I said, ‘What are you doing here?’ ”

The question would seem to apply to Llodra at the United States Open. Professional tennis has become a baseliners’ kingdom in recent years, with advances in string technology and racket technology and players’ resulting ability to generate pace from extended positions conspiring against those aggressive traditionalists who still have a yen for the net.

But Llodra, 30, has kept pushing the point and pushing forward, and his approach, however lonely, does not yet deserve to be labeled an anachronism. Despite inflammation in the arch of his left foot that had him wondering if he could play here, he appears to be in the form of his life. After taking out the Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych in the first round in straight sets without dropping his serve, he did the same thing to another more physically imposing opponent, Victor Hanescu of Romania, on Friday, winning, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-2.

For those with the foresight or good fortune to have found their way to Court 13, it was 2 hours 10 minutes very well spent, as Llodra showed off a wide range of tennis exotica that sent ripple after ripple of appreciation through the sun-baked crowd.

Llodra, ranked 35th after dropping to No. 144 last year, came to net the time-honored way: after sliced approach shots. He came to net after ripped returns, usually ripped with his one-handed backhand. He came to net, of course, after his serve, but the best bits happened after he got there, as he used his deft touch to hit drop-volley winners, half-volley drop-shot winners, backhand overhead winners, reflex volley winners and straightforward volley winners.

Good things happened far too often — he won 71 percent of the points when he was at net — for it to be all about reflexes and athleticism. There was also a clear understanding of the geometry of net play: of setting up the next volley with the first, of positioning the body and the racket head in the most advantageous spots. And for many of those who have spent time watching today’s players trade gale-force forehands from several feet behind the baseline, it felt rather like reconnecting with a lost art.

“He’s a poet,” came a voice from above.

“Sweetness,” said Burt Podbere, a 44-year-old Canadian who was sitting three rows up from the court.

“Sure, I hear it,” said Llodra, who said he got a particular kick out of hearing the word “terrific” in the United States. “The accent makes me laugh, and they look at me like I made an extraterrestrial shot. But I try to stay focused on the match, otherwise you can quickly drift far away. I’m happy because I have the impression to hit a shot they never have seen, but it’s still just a tennis shot. If I can hit it, it’s not impossible.”

Llodra, whose father was a professional soccer player in France, chose tennis over soccer as a youngster and then proceeded to get himself kicked out of tennis clubs and the prestigious training center in Boulouris for breaking too many rules (including curfew) and talking back far too often.

“I like to make jokes, I like to tease, but when I was young I was also a bit arrogant and sometimes I went beyond the limits,” he said.

Marriage and fatherhood — he has two young children — have calmed the beast considerably. But he remains a prankster and provocateur at heart.

“Most of them aren’t fit for your newspaper,” said his coach, Remi Barbarin. “He’s got a taste for the burlesque. He’s very funny. He takes up a lot of the air in the room, because he likes to talk. If he’s not talking, things are bad. “

But on court, Llodra tends to play it cooler, channeling his nervous energy. Still, there are moments when his inner muse gets too loud to ignore. He served underhand against Roger Federer during his loss to him last month in Toronto simply because he wanted to try something different. He later exchanged shirts on court after the match with Federer, a friend since junior days, as if they were soccer players.

Llodra does not do bashful, just as he didn’t in 2004 when he and partner Fabrice Santoro stripped down to their underwear after winning the Australian Open doubles title and threw their clothes into the stands.

“He’s got an impulsive side, no doubt, but he’s a terrific guy and a family man at heart,” Barbarin said.

While others serve and volley, nobody does it as frequently as Llodra on both his first and second serve. He gets away with it in part because he has great hands and quickness, in part because he has experience but also because he’s a left-hander.

“I think if I were right-handed I would create fewer problems,” he said. “It’s true that being a lefty I find different angles. There are not many lefties out here.”

He is also one of the last players on tour to use pure gut string, a move made to enhance his touch. Others who still use pure gut include his fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clément and the Williams sisters. But the vast majority now use polyester strings or a blend of gut and polyester.

“I played for two years on clay with half and half, and it’s true I lost lots of sensations on, for example, drop volleys,” Llodra said. “It’s true I could hit harder from the baseline and control the ball, but it didn’t really let me play my best game, because I tended to stay back more, and I didn’t go to net enough.”

That has not been the case in New York this year.

Re: Michael Llodra

Llodra is bringing the serve and volley game back to life again

It's so refreshing to see a real serve and volleyer making his way deep into a Grand Slam. I regret it, but it's unfortunately an endangered species nowadays. That kind of player is a victim of the way the surfaces have been slowed, like the balls. As the young players are identifying themselves with the big stars of their days, they're developing a similar game style. No wonder they don't even think of this kind of play, for my biggest regret. Yannick Noah, Pat Cash, Patrick Rafter or Stefan Edberg's era is gone for good. Under those circumstances, what Michaël Llodra is achieving in New York gives me, personally, a huge satisfaction.

Since a decade, ATP is in a « let's get the game slower » strategy. Surfaces and balls allow dictating the speed of the game. Wimbledon is surely the best example of a deep work aiming at changing the way of playing on this surface. Grass, so fast back in the days, has been slowed again and again with changing the grass used and with bringing in the game larger and heaviest balls. It's all about details here for sure but at the end you can see how big the game has been affected.

I'm not trying at all, let this be clear, to undermine Rafael Nadal's victory, but this result would have been way more difficult to achieve in the old conditions. Even indoor surfaces, once such a treat for the big serving guys and for the aggressive players, have suffered the same evolution. Courts are rough, taking the effects a lot, especially the topspin. From one tournament to an other, form a court to an other one, differences remain of course but they've been lowered, smoothed in order to get more and more homogeneity. This decision is of course harming the diversity of the game and it leads to see everybody playing the same way with a huge advantage for the big hitters. This slowing down process has pushed to the exit a whole generation of serve and volleyers. The game of those players is mainly driven by the speed and by putting the opponent under pressure so they can't put their game in order.

This type of surface is helping Michaël's game

They're now only a few to try to go on in this aggressive tennis. Among us, Michaël Llodra, who will try to earn his ticket for the quarters against Tommy Robredo. He's taking advantage of the US Open courts, which are really faster this season than the other Grand Slams. The Frenchie is leaving an amazing week and displaying a very beautiful game. It must be said that this Grand Slam has always kind of succeeded to the aggressive players. The rebound is lower and the speed is higher than what players can find on other tournaments of the tour. Historically, Flushing Meadows has always been the serve and volleyers land. McEnroe won four times, Edberg twice, Becker once, Rafter twice and Sampras five times.

A really light pressure

French players don't like pressure. When they're waited, they're most of the times, disappointing. On the contrary, they're playing much more freely and achieving wonderful matches when they're playing in the shadow, under the radar. Before the US Open, you would read many articles on the theme "Frenchies can't make it at the US Open." Adding to that, Mika is battling a foot injury since the start of the tournament. He even didn't know if he was going to be able to play his first match at all. But at the end, conditions are becoming perfect for him cause he's playing totally relaxed. If he wins, it's a big achievement and if he loses well it'll be taken as somehow logical. So he's just playing a point at a time, without any back thought. He's living in the moment and enjoying each bit of it.

A special style

As the good « last of the last serve and volleyer » player he is, he's disturbing every other guy. Nobody is used to play against him and his game style. The opponent is tense cause put under pressure all the time by Mika coming to the net. So his opponents feel the need to take more risks even when they're not in position to. Mika is attacking them even on second serves and, when the play is on, he waits for the first short ball to rush at the net. When he's facing Tomas Berdych in the first round, it's the Czech who is under pressure and who has the most to lose. So Mika pushes and pushes again and Berdych spreads the unforced errors all over the place.
Other advantage for the French is that he's a lefty. They're very few on the tour and it helps him to find unusual angles. Tough for an opponent to find his routine in this situation so he's constantly hitting the ball feeling uncomfortable.

The importance of staying fresh minded

Waiting to see if the French will inspire some young players, which I'm strongly hoping for, I can only hope that he'll realize what he's achieving right now as late as possible. Innocence is one of the keys, like what Tsonga or Baghdatis have done in the past at the Australian Open and then were brought back on earth in a snap while understanding what was going on. Marcos always told me the following thing: "Don't let me think". A lot of meaning behind this cause Marcos, who is always more efficient when he plays freely, knows that he'll play the best when he just lets his body act without being disturbed by a wrong thinking. Mika is in this state of mind and let's hope he'll stay in the zone as long as possible.

Re: Michael Llodra

Na trybunach w Bercy siedzi ktoś szczególnie zainteresowany formą Llodrą: to Guy Forget, kapitan Francuzów w Pucharze Davisa, którego finał w Belgradzie "trójkolorowi" zagrają w dniach 3-5 grudnia.

The Last Word: ATP No. 23, Michael Llodra

http://www.tennis.com/articles/articlefiles/9208-2010_12_9_Llodra.jpg
Llodra is widely regarded as the best
serve-and-volleyer on the ATP tour.

Best of 2010
The Frenchman was brilliant at the Paris Masters, the final regular-season tournament. After beating John Isner in the second round, Llodra shocked Novak Djokovic in straight sets and defeated Nikolay Davydenko to reach the semifinals. Llodra’s inspired run ended against Robin Soderling, who won 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (6) after the serve-and-volleyer missed on three match points.

Worst of 2010
Llodra came into 2010 ranked No. 67 and slid from there. The lefty dropped four of his first five matches.

Year in Review
Known primarily for his play in doubles, Llodra made an imprint on the singles circuit this season. The 11-year-veteran won two titles (Marseille and Eastbourne) and ascended higher than No. 30 in the singles rankings for the first time. Llodra can attribute much of his success to his exceptional lefty serve, which routinely frustrates players. The Frenchman gobbles up weak returns with his serve-and-volley tactics, another wrinkle of his game that can trouble his opponents (which are mostly power baseliners). This uncommon but effective approach catapulted Llodra 44 spots in the rankings from the start of the season.

See for Yourself
Llodra’s serve-and-volley game was firing on all cylinders against Djokovic in Paris, to the delight of the hometown crowd.

The Last Word
Facts are facts: Llodra will be 31 next season, doesn’t hit the ball particularly hard and has an unconventional style of play. So this was all a fluke, right? Wrong. He’s figured out how to win consistently, and although the Top 10 seems too high a mountain to climb, the Frenchman will continue to impress in 2011.
