US Open, postać 3. dnia: Michaël Llodra

30-letni Michaël Llodra (ATP 35) zagrał jak profesor w spotkaniu z finalistą Wimbledonu Tomášem Berdychem (ATP 7). Czech nie grał źle (popełnił tylko 18 niewymuszonych błędów), ale w starciu z szalejącym przy siatce tenisistą z Ruiel-Malmaison był bezradny. Za nami trzeci dzień US Open i po raz trzeci na miano postaci dnia zasłużył reprezentant Francji.
Llodra na 75 wycieczek do siatki zdobył 48 punktów, wolej go nie zawodził w tych najważniejszych momentach. Wygrał turnieje w Marsylii (korty twarde) i Eastbourne (trawa) oraz osiągnął ćwierćfinał na kortach klubu Queen's (trawa). W sumie na swoim koncie ma pięć tytułów w singlu. Największe sukcesy w karierze osiągnął jednak w grze podwójnej, w parze z Fabricem Santoro wygrał Australian Open 2003 i 2004 oraz Masters Cup 2005, a wspólnie z Arnaudem Clémentem triumfował podczas Wimbledonu 2007.

W singlowych występach w Wielkim Szlemie Llodra najdalej zawędrował do 1/8 finału, co udało mu się dotychczas trzykrotnie: na Roland Garros 2004 i 2008 oraz US Open 2004.

Strong Net Play to Match His Sense of Humor

Michael Llodra’s originality is not restricted to his style of play. This, after all, is the same French player who decided to stuff himself into Ivan Ljubicic’s locker completely nude in 2005 in an attempt, so he explained, to capture the good vibrations that Ljubicic was generating by winning so many matches.

It should come as no surprise that Ljubicic was in for quite a surprise when he opened his locker door that spring in Miami.

“He was looking at me, I was looking at him,” Ljubicic said. “I said, ‘What are you doing here?’ ”

The question would seem to apply to Llodra at the United States Open. Professional tennis has become a baseliners’ kingdom in recent years, with advances in string technology and racket technology and players’ resulting ability to generate pace from extended positions conspiring against those aggressive traditionalists who still have a yen for the net.

But Llodra, 30, has kept pushing the point and pushing forward, and his approach, however lonely, does not yet deserve to be labeled an anachronism. Despite inflammation in the arch of his left foot that had him wondering if he could play here, he appears to be in the form of his life. After taking out the Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych in the first round in straight sets without dropping his serve, he did the same thing to another more physically imposing opponent, Victor Hanescu of Romania, on Friday, winning, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-2.

For those with the foresight or good fortune to have found their way to Court 13, it was 2 hours 10 minutes very well spent, as Llodra showed off a wide range of tennis exotica that sent ripple after ripple of appreciation through the sun-baked crowd.

Llodra, ranked 35th after dropping to No. 144 last year, came to net the time-honored way: after sliced approach shots. He came to net after ripped returns, usually ripped with his one-handed backhand. He came to net, of course, after his serve, but the best bits happened after he got there, as he used his deft touch to hit drop-volley winners, half-volley drop-shot winners, backhand overhead winners, reflex volley winners and straightforward volley winners.

Good things happened far too often — he won 71 percent of the points when he was at net — for it to be all about reflexes and athleticism. There was also a clear understanding of the geometry of net play: of setting up the next volley with the first, of positioning the body and the racket head in the most advantageous spots. And for many of those who have spent time watching today’s players trade gale-force forehands from several feet behind the baseline, it felt rather like reconnecting with a lost art.

“He’s a poet,” came a voice from above.

“Sweetness,” said Burt Podbere, a 44-year-old Canadian who was sitting three rows up from the court.

“Sure, I hear it,” said Llodra, who said he got a particular kick out of hearing the word “terrific” in the United States. “The accent makes me laugh, and they look at me like I made an extraterrestrial shot. But I try to stay focused on the match, otherwise you can quickly drift far away. I’m happy because I have the impression to hit a shot they never have seen, but it’s still just a tennis shot. If I can hit it, it’s not impossible.”

Llodra, whose father was a professional soccer player in France, chose tennis over soccer as a youngster and then proceeded to get himself kicked out of tennis clubs and the prestigious training center in Boulouris for breaking too many rules (including curfew) and talking back far too often.

“I like to make jokes, I like to tease, but when I was young I was also a bit arrogant and sometimes I went beyond the limits,” he said.

Marriage and fatherhood — he has two young children — have calmed the beast considerably. But he remains a prankster and provocateur at heart.

“Most of them aren’t fit for your newspaper,” said his coach, Remi Barbarin. “He’s got a taste for the burlesque. He’s very funny. He takes up a lot of the air in the room, because he likes to talk. If he’s not talking, things are bad. “

But on court, Llodra tends to play it cooler, channeling his nervous energy. Still, there are moments when his inner muse gets too loud to ignore. He served underhand against Roger Federer during his loss to him last month in Toronto simply because he wanted to try something different. He later exchanged shirts on court after the match with Federer, a friend since junior days, as if they were soccer players.

Llodra does not do bashful, just as he didn’t in 2004 when he and partner Fabrice Santoro stripped down to their underwear after winning the Australian Open doubles title and threw their clothes into the stands.

“He’s got an impulsive side, no doubt, but he’s a terrific guy and a family man at heart,” Barbarin said.

While others serve and volley, nobody does it as frequently as Llodra on both his first and second serve. He gets away with it in part because he has great hands and quickness, in part because he has experience but also because he’s a left-hander.

“I think if I were right-handed I would create fewer problems,” he said. “It’s true that being a lefty I find different angles. There are not many lefties out here.”

He is also one of the last players on tour to use pure gut string, a move made to enhance his touch. Others who still use pure gut include his fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clément and the Williams sisters. But the vast majority now use polyester strings or a blend of gut and polyester.

“I played for two years on clay with half and half, and it’s true I lost lots of sensations on, for example, drop volleys,” Llodra said. “It’s true I could hit harder from the baseline and control the ball, but it didn’t really let me play my best game, because I tended to stay back more, and I didn’t go to net enough.”

That has not been the case in New York this year.

W ostatnich meczach tak właśnie obchodził się z rywalami: przetrwał początek i wygrywał pierwszego seta. Tamci obniżają poziom gry, ponieważ są zmęczeni i sfrustrowani tym, że nie mogą złapać rytmu.

Best of 2010
The Frenchman was brilliant at the Paris Masters, the final regular-season tournament. After beating John Isner in the second round, Llodra shocked Novak Djokovic in straight sets and defeated Nikolay Davydenko to reach the semifinals. Llodra’s inspired run ended against Robin Soderling, who won 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (6) after the serve-and-volleyer missed on three match points.

Worst of 2010
Llodra came into 2010 ranked No. 67 and slid from there. The lefty dropped four of his first five matches.

Year in Review
Known primarily for his play in doubles, Llodra made an imprint on the singles circuit this season. The 11-year-veteran won two titles (Marseille and Eastbourne) and ascended higher than No. 30 in the singles rankings for the first time. Llodra can attribute much of his success to his exceptional lefty serve, which routinely frustrates players. The Frenchman gobbles up weak returns with his serve-and-volley tactics, another wrinkle of his game that can trouble his opponents (which are mostly power baseliners). This uncommon but effective approach catapulted Llodra 44 spots in the rankings from the start of the season.

The Last Word
Facts are facts: Llodra will be 31 next season, doesn’t hit the ball particularly hard and has an unconventional style of play. So this was all a fluke, right? Wrong. He’s figured out how to win consistently, and although the Top 10 seems too high a mountain to climb, the Frenchman will continue to impress in 2011.
