Nalbandian Targets NZ Return

David Nalbandian will test his surgically-repaired right hip in Auckland in January.

Nalbandian, who underwent surgery on his hip in May in Barcelona, has entered the Heineken Open set for January 11-16, tournament director Richard Palmer announced today.

It will be Nalbandian's first tournament since he lost to Paul Capdeville in the opening round of Estoril in May. The former World No. 3 has entered the field while his Davis Cup teammate, Juan Martin del Potro, has opted against defending his Auckland title. Del Potro beat Sam Querrey in straight sets to win Auckland last January.

"Nalbandian is a quality player who has something special in his game," tournament director Richard Palmer said. "He's the sort of player who has the ability to really challenge for the Heineken Open title and get back into the top 10."

Doctors Marc Philippon, who operated on Gustavo Kuerten's hip, and Jaime Vilaro performed the procedure on Nalbandian's hip. The 2006 Australian Open semifinalist sustained the injury in Argentina's 2008 Davis Cup quarterfinal win against Sweden and tried various forms of rehab and rest, but his hip was unresponsive to treatment, compelling him to undergo surgery.

"It was very difficult to make the decision to have the surgery," said Nalbandian. "I tried to push it as much as possible but I was suffering when I played and I could not continue like that. There was no other option."

The 2002 Wimbledon runner-up to Lleyton Hewitt, opened his 2009 campaign beating Michael Llodra, Hewitt, Richard Gasquet and Jarkko Nieminen in succession to capture his 10th career singles title in Sydney.

Former French Open champion Kuerten, former French Open finalist Magnus Norman and former World No. 1 Hewitt have all undergone hip surgery in recent years. Hewitt is the only one of the three still playing. Kuerten and former French Open finalist Magnus Norman were never the same players after undergoing surgery, however Hewitt did enjoy success in his return from hip surgery this season. Hewitt won the Houston title on clay then upset del Potro en route to the Wimbledon quarterfinals where he lost a close clash to Andy Roddick.

Nalbandian will celebrate his 28th birthday on January 1. Currently ranked No. 20, he said his goals remain clear: regain his spot in the top 10, win a Grand Slam singles title and help Argentina win its first Davis Cup championship.

"The aim is to once more return to the top 10, maintain my position and try to win a Grand Slam," Nalbandian said. "And obviously, Davis Cup is one of my dreams as well."

David Nalbandian, była rakieta numer 3 rankingu, w pierwszym od maja ubiegłego roku publicznym występie pokonał w sobotę w pokazowym meczu 6:2, 6:1 Nicolása Massú.
Na stadionie Aldo Contoniego w argentyńskim San Juan (było 5 tys. widzów) Nalbandian wystąpił publicznie po siedmiu miesiącach przeznaczonych na leczenie i rehabilitację po kontuzji. W ubiegłym roku przeszedł operację lewego biodra.

Decyzja o samym zabiegu była według niego najtrudniejszą sprawą w okresie rozbratu z tenisem: - Krytycznym etapem był czas po operacji, gdy nie mogłem nic robić. Gdy ponownie stanąłem na korcie powiedziałem sobie: "Mam nadzieję, że wciąż potrafisz biegać" - mówi.

Auckland's Heineken Open tennis has lost its biggest drawcard with the withdrawal of Argentinian ace David Nalbandian.
The former world number three suffered a light abdominal strain in warm-ups and has had to pull out of what was going to be his first tournament in eight months.
Nalbandian hadn't played on the ATP tour since May, when he underwent surgery on his right hip.
I am very disappointed not to be able to make my comeback this week at the Heineken Open. I was very much looking forward into playing in Auckland once again," Nalbandian said.
"I didn't play much tennis for eight months so it is natural to suffer some small injuries. Although I am disappointed at the moment, I remain confident and positive about making a full time come back to the tour soon.
"I thank tournament director Richard Palmer for giving me the wild card and the opportunity to resume my career and I hope to come back next year and play in front of the kiwi crowd."
Nalbandian's withdrawl is a blow for the tournament, particularly as his match against former Heineken Open champion Philipp Kohlschreiber looked set to be the biggest match of the first round.
"I'm disappointed, but what can you do," Palmer said.
"It's not the first time this has happened to me in a tournament, and if I keep doing this it will happen again."
A ultrasound scan at a radiology practice confirmed Nalbandian's injury and it puts his participation in the Australian Open in doubt.
"These usually take 10 to 15 days to come right," Palmer said.
Nalbandian's place in the draw will be taken by world number 235 Inigo Cervantes-Huegin of Spain.

The No. 140 Argentine has now had to pull from his nation's March 5-7 trip to Stockholm to face Sweden,leaving the visitors without their top two with Juan Del Potro nursing a wrist problem until mid-March or later.
Nalbandian managed only two round on court as his comeback stalled. He was derailed form playing the Australian Open by a stomach muscle complaint.

The 28-year-old's sad news: "It's a three-millimetre tear in the adductor muscle of his right leg," said a tournament doctor. Nalbandian will need at least 10 days off court.

Injury hit Argentine David Nalbandian has said that he intends to be physically fit and ready for a return to Wimbledon as he sets his sights on competing once again at The Championships starting on June 21.

Nalbandian was forced to pull out of Roland Garros this year because of a hamstring injury and has featured in only five events this year since recovering from a recent hip operation that forced him to miss much of last season.

Under the guidance of his medical team Nalbandian, 28, who surprised everyone with an incredible run to the 2002 final in his first Wimbledon campaign, has made the decision not to accept an invitation to play in the ATP 250 grass court event held at The Queens Club in a bid to be 100% ready and able for a return to Grand Slam action on the lawns of SW19.

The popular Argentine said, “I am very focused on my recovery, I am training in double shifts to try to play Wimbledon.”
