Re: Albert Montanes

Albert Montañés: “Anything is possible!”

The newly crowned champion of the Estoril Open, Albert Montañés is fairly modest for a Grand Slam favourite, despite a shock win over Roger Federer in the Portuguese tournament. This is Montañés' ninth appearance at the French Open, and he is looking to end the season ranked in the top 100 for the tenth consecutive year, a feat not many players can boast.

After his comfortable victory over Stefano Galvani in the first round, the Spaniard answered a few questions for us. On the menu: his win over Federer, his next game and his objective for the French Open.

Tell us about your game with Stefano Galvani. How do you see this year’s French Open?
It was a tough match against a tough rival. The fact that it was a first round match in a Grand Slam tournament made it even more difficult. I haven’t set myself any goals for the rest of the tournament. I’m going to play each game as it comes. In theory, if I want to get through to the third round, I have to beat Soderling. He’s a great player and was a finalist last year. No doubt he’ll be looking for a repeat performance.

What’s it like living in Nadal’s shadow? How do you see your future career?
It’s not surprising that I’m in Nadal’s shadow – and the shadow of the other Spanish players. I’m really not worried about it. I just try to do my own thing. People think I’m a clay specialist - and it’s true. I’m at home on the red dirt; it’s the surface I learnt to play on. My four tournament wins [Estoril twice, Bucharest and Amersfoort] were all on clay. I’m getting better on faster surfaces. I’m trying to be more aggressive and make the most of the fact that today’s fast surfaces are slower. Beating Federer was fantastic, because he’s the No.1, but I preferred winning the tournament.

Do you think anyone can shake up the Nadal-Federer rivalry?
David Ferrer, he’s playing really well this year. That doesn’t mean I don’t think I’m performing well, it’s just that I have to be realistic. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but this is a two-week tournament and there are some amazing players. Nothing is impossible: you have to create your own success.

Re: Albert Montanes

Montanes Lifts Second Trophy Of The Season

World No. 30 Albert Montanes  closed out an exceptional week for Spanish sport on Sunday. Following Spain’s victory in the FIFA World Cup final last weekend and Nicolas Almagro’s triumph in Bastad earlier in the day, the Barcelona resident won his second ATP World Tour title of the season at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart.

Montanes was crowned champion when third seed Gael Monfils was forced to retire with a right ankle injury; Montanes had been leading 6-2, 1-2 in the pair’s second meeting. He received 250 South African Airways 2010 ATP Ranking points and €72,150 in prize money, plus a brand new white Mercedes-Benz E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY convertible.

"I played very well. In the first set I played good in the rallies and my confidence was good," reflected Montanes. "I am very happy with the win today. It is unbelievable for me. All week I played unbelievably. I’m very happy about this week. The Mercedes [I won] is very nice."

The 29-year-old Montanes became the sixth different Spanish winner at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tennis tournament in Stuttgart, joining David Ferrer (2006), Rafael Nadal (2005, 2007), Alex Corretja (1997), Alberto Berasategui (1994), and Jose Higueras (1983).

The right-hander improved to a 5-4 record in ATP World Tour finals. All nine of his ATP World Tour final appearances have come on outdoor clay, including his victory at the Estoril Open (d. Federer, Gil) in May. It is the second straight year that the Spaniard has won two ATP World Tour titles in the same season, having won in Estoril (d. Blake) and Bucharest (d. Monaco) in 2009.

Montanes went into Sunday’s final with the confidence of having beaten No. 2 seed Jurgen Melzer and No. 4 Juan Carlos Ferrero back-to-back in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. He broke Monfils’ serve in the third and seventh games as he raced to a one-set lead in 33 minutes. The Frenchman was forced to retire just three games into the second set, though.

The No. 17-ranked Monfils dropped to a 2-8 record in ATP World Tour finals; his two titles came at Metz (d. Kohlschreiber) last year and at Sopot (d. F. Mayer) in 2005. He was contesting his first ATP World Tour final since finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic in Paris last November.

"I twisted my ankle on the court and it was impossible to finish the match," said Monfils. "The week was good. I played pretty good tennis, a lot of confidence came back. To reach a final again was pretty exciting. I had a bad experience (today) but hopefully it will be better soon and I can get back to my best level and try to reach some other finals."

Last weekend, the Parisian was part of the French Davis Cup team that dethroned two-time defending champion Spain in the World Group quarter-finals. Monfils won the first rubber for France with a dramatic five-set victory over David Ferrer, He has compiled a 24-12 mark on the season.

Re: Albert Montanes

The Last Word: ATP No. 25, Albert Montanes

Best of 2010
From first round to final, Stuttgart was Montanes’ most impressive week. But we won’t remember wins over Jurgen Melzer, Juan Carlos Ferrero or Gael Monfils—I certainly didn’t, until I looked at the record books. Beating Roger Federer is different. That’s what Montanes did in the Estoril semis, which he followed up with a win over hometown favorite Frederico Gil.

Worst of 2010
The clay-court specialist did well at most of the big dirt events, but in Rome he lost in the first round to obscure Italian Paolo Lorenzi.

Year in Review

All of Montanes’ career titles (five) and runner-ups (four) were earned on clay, but his 2010 results suggest he’s developing into a greater threat on all courts. He reached the third round of all four Slams and gave Robin Soderling a good match in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. He also reached two hard-court semifinals, one indoors and one outside. But the lack of a point-ending shot and strong serve will always make life difficult for Montanes away from clay. He was one of five Spaniards to finish in the Top 25, and reached a career-high ranking of No. 22 in August.

The Last Word
When Montanes felled Federer, he didn’t react as if he won a Grand Slam title. It was a surprising sight, but maybe the right one: Montanes must have known Federer wasn’t at his best. Montanes also knows his game well—and its limitations—and he’s gotten the most out of it. We won’t see him in the Top 10, but in the final of a big clay tournament? That’s certainly possible, on the right day. Win that match, and the celebration will come.
