Re: Australian Open 2011

Three Australians barred from Oz Open playoffs

Tennis Australia has barred three players from the Australian Open wildcard playoffs because of poor behavior, reports the Herald Sun.

Brydan Klein, the 2007 Australian Open boys' singles champion, 2006 runner-up Nick Lindahl and Dayne Kelly have been told they cannot contest the December 17-19 playoff.

"This action has been taken following reports of numerous accounts of unacceptable behavior at tournaments both locally and internationally over the past few months," Tennis Australia’s Todd Woodbridge said. “All players are expected to abide by Tennis Australia's code of ethics and behavior. The opportunity to participate in the Australian Open playoff is a privilege, not a right. This decision will send a clear message to all Australian players that breaching this code will not be supported by Tennis Australia through the granting of wildcards or other financial support."

Klein was suspended for six months last year for allegedly calling a South African opponent a "kaffir" and spitting at his coach and another player during a tournament in England. Two weeks ago after losing at a tournament in New Zealand, he reportedly threw his racket, swore and battled courtside photographers. Lindahl is said to have similar problems with his temper.—Matthew Cronin

Nadal early favorite over Federer for Aussie Open

http://www.tennistalk.com/images/article/1326.jpg

Nadal early favorite over Federer for Aussie Open The Australian Open is just over a month away and the early lines are out. Rafael Nadal is a slight favorite of defending champion Roger Federer.

An early look at--and analysis of--the odds to win the 2011 Australian Open:

Rafael Nadal: 2 to 1
Pros - The relatively slow, high-bouncing surface suits Nadal's game perfectly (especially given the world No. 1's new-and-improved aggressive tactics). In his last healthy visit Down Under, Nadal won the title by defeating Roger Federer despite playing the longest match in tournament history just two days earlier against Fernando Verdasco.
Cons - Not that anyone thought Nadal's 2009 triumph in Melbourne was a fluke, but he put any of those fluke questions to rest by winning another hard-court Grand Slam at this year's U.S. Open. Still, the Spaniard's hard-court prowess is up for debate. He struggled on fast surfaces after his win in New York and even though he reached the World Tour Finals title match, he got run over by Federer. Nadal also won't have fond memories of his last trip to Melbourne, when he was getting blown off the court by Andy Murray in the quarters before retiring with knee pain.

Roger Federer: 5 to 2
Pros - Federer has never dominated the Australian Open like he has Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, but he's not too shabby Down Under. His lifetime record is 54-7 and he has won the whole thing four times, including in 2010. The world No. 2 is also coming off a big win at the World Tour Finals, scoring a crucial confidence-booster over Nadal in the process.
Cons - While Federer had some great moments this year and heated up at the end, it still was not one of his better seasons. Nadal is not only No. 1 in the world, but it's not even that close. Federer is becoming more and more of a momentum player; when he is hot, he's on fire, but when he's cold, he can't find the court. Will the offseason put out his hot streak?

Andy Murray: 5 to 1
Pros - Murray went all the way to the Aussie Open final this year, steamrolling Nadal in the process. The Scot still has not gotten over the hump at a Grand Slam, but the experience of losing to Federer twice in title matches (also at the 2008 U.S. Open) will only help the next time he makes a final. His last match of 2010, against Nadal in London, was arguably the match of the year.
Cons - After losing in the Aussie final, Murray did not come close to making another one in 2010. He had a decent run at Wimbledon but got destroyed by Nadal. Another early loss at the U.S. Open was especially dismal for Murray. He recovered for a solid showing during the fall season, but the Grand Slam questions will be running rampant in Melbourne.

Novak Djokovic: 7 to 1
Pros - Djokovic is coming off one of the biggest moments of his career--winning the Davis Cup with Serbia. He did not get the glory of clinching the final rubber, but he won every single match he played in 2010. World Tour Finals losses to Nadal and Federer notwithstanding, Djokovic was in outstanding form throughout the fall swing.
Cons - In an otherwise stellar year, Djokovic was pretty much atrocious in Grand Slams until the U.S. Open. He suffered upsets at the hands of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Jurgen Melzer, and Tomas Berdych. The world No. 3's breathing issues were not much of a factor during the second half of 2010, but the summer heat of Australia could bring them back to the fore.

Other odds
Juan Martin Del Potro: 12 to 1
Robin Soderling: 18 to 1
Tomas Berdych: 25 to 1
David Nalbandian: 25 to 1

Z tym del Potro to chyba jakiś żart.

Re: Australian Open 2011

Ill Tomic withdraws from Australian Open wildcard playoffs

Aussie tennis hopeful Bernard Tomic withdrew Monday a day before the start of the Australian Open wildcard play-offs, citing illness.

The late pullout from the event means the former Australian and US Open junior champion must prove his medical condition.

“The rules require that Bernard present us with a doctor’s certificate to confirm that he is not well enough to play,” said play-off tournament director Mark Handley. “He has done that.”

The event for men and women awards a wildcard entry into the first Grand Slam of the season next month for winner’s on the men’s and women’s side. Competition — knockout for men and round-robin progressing to knockout for women — begins Tuesday at Melbourne Park.

Tomic, aged 18 and ranked 208, had a bye in the opening round and would have played the winner of a first-round match.

Re: Australian Open 2011

Kubot pozytywnie nastawiony przed sezonu, do którego przygotowuje się w Pradze

Łukasz Kubot i Michał Przysiężny, obaj polscy tenisiści sklasyfikowani w pierwszej setce rankingu ATP World Tour, mają zapewnione miejsce w głównej drabince wielkoszlemowego turnieju Australian Open. Odbędzie się on w dniach 17-30 stycznia w Melbourne.

Miało to miejsce tuż po Wimbledonie, przed którym polskiego tenisistę opuścił Machitka (rozpoczął on wówczas współpracę z deblistą Czechem Dlouhým.

We wrześniu Polak rozstał się też z czeskim trenerem Tomášem Hláskiem i później podróżował jedynie w towarzystwie partnera deblowego Austriaka Olivera Maracha. W styczniu będzie bronił 225 punktów za czwartą rundę Australian Open i ćwierćfinał turnieju ATP w Dausze.

Również drugi z Polaków, zajmujący 86. miejsce w ATP World Tour, Michał Przysiężny wystąpi w Melbourne.

W przypadku Przysiężnego największą niewiadomą i zarazem niepokojącym zjawiskiem są liczne kontuzje, jakie nękały go w poprzednim sezonie. Po części były skutkiem ciągłych zmian trenerów. W sumie skreczował w pięciu turniejach z powodu urazu barku, lewego kolana, prawej ręki, zwichniętej kostki i bólu kręgosłupa w odcinku lędźwiowym.

Re: Australian Open 2011

Harrison, Young bidding for USTA's Aussie wild card

The USTA's Australian Open wild card playoffs are taking place this weekend in Atlanta. Ryan Harrison and Donald Young are among those hoping to gain entry into 2011's first Grand Slam.

Eight up-and-coming Americans will battle it out for the USTA's wild card into the 2011 Australian Open this weekend in Atlanta. Let's take a look at the field:

Jordan Cox
- Cox, 18, has been on the junior radar screen for quite some time. He reached the final of the 2009 Wimbledon juniors, but he failed to do anything notable in 2010. As a result, he is now under the radar at least compared to other contenders this week.

Ryan Harrison
- Harrison, 18, is considered America's best teenage prospect. He upset Ivan Ljubicic in the first round of this year's U.S. Open and had three match points against Sergiy Stakhovsky before falling in a fifth-set tiebreaker.

Denis Kudla
- Kudla, 18, has been tearing it up the junior circuit. Among the highlights is a run to the final of this season's U.S. Open juniors. Futures and Challengers, however, are proving to be a much tougher test for Kudla.

Shabaz
- Shabaz, 23, is one of the oldest of the bunch but perhaps the least well-known; that's because he opted for college and has been starring as the University if Virginia's No. 1 player. Last month he enjoyed an amazing run to the Charlottesville Challenger title match, upsetting Harrison, Kei Nishikori, and Chris Guccione in the process.

Tim Smycze
k - Smyczek, 23, is the oldest player in the field and he has more experience at the ATP level than anyone other than Harrison and Donald Young. He has played six tour-level matches in his career, including five this season (winning one). On paper (No. 171 in the world), Smyczek is one of the favorites.

Jack Sock
- Sock, 18, is one America's most heralded juniors. And why not? He won the U.S. Open junior title (perhaps aided by some practice sessions with Novak Djokovic), beating Kudla in the final. Sock, though, has been struggling in Futures and Challengers.

Rhyne Williams
- Williams, 19, went the college route like Shabaz. He played No. 3 for the University of Tennessee, which lost in the NCAA Championship to the University of Southern California. Williams also fared well on the Challenger circuit this season, so he should not be overlooked.

Donald Young
- Young, 21, still has age on his side despite seemingly having been around forever. Despite his relative youth, all the years of failing to live up to expectations have to be taking a toll on him. Young is the biggest name and the highest-ranked player in the field (No. 132), but the pressure of being the so-called favorite probably won't help.

Who the USTA wants to win: Harrison. By a mile. He is thought to be the next big thing in American tennis and he--along with Young--would have a chance to advance a round or two Down Under.

Who should win: Young. He has the most experience in big-time tournaments and is playing at home in Atlanta.

Who will win: Harrison. He is playing with confidence after a breakout 2010 season. If he goes up against Young at any point this week, the mental edge definitely goes to Harrison.

Ciekawi mnie ten Berman.
