Defending Champion Hewitt Returns With Win; Berdych To Play Troicki in QFs
Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt has
been out of action since mid-March.
Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt beat Argentinean lucky loser Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday at the Gerry Weber Open.
The former World No. 1 from Australia, who is playing just his fifth tournament this year due to injuries, won 74 per cent of service points and hit six aces for victory in 69 minutes. Mayer failed to convert any of his three break point opportunities. It was Hewitt's first match since losing to Yen-Hsun Lu at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in March.
"I didn't have a lot of high expectations going out there," admitted Hewitt, who trained on grass in London prior to the event. "But I felt I got better as the match went on, which was good. I got used to the conditions and the grass out there. It's totally different to the practice courts at the moment, which took me a little while to adjust."
Hewitt, who will next meet Italian Andreas Seppi in the second round, will be hoping to lift his eighth tour-level grass-court title. He has a 102-24 overall record on the surface.
Second seed and 2007 titlist Tomas Berdych recovered from a 3-5 second-set deficit to beat fellow Czech and qualifier Jan Hernych 6-3, 7-6(4) in one hour and 48 minutes for a place in the quarter-finals. The pair also met in the 2009 first round.
Berdych, who saved three match points Tuesday against Ruben Bemelmans, saved six of seven break points and hit 11 aces. He improved to a 12-3 record at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament.
Berdych will next face fifth seed Viktor Troicki, who advanced to his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final (or better) on the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Russian Igor Andreev in 53 minutes. World No. 12 Troicki was runner-up to Gilles Simon at the Medibank International Sydney in January. He has a 27-13 match record on the season.
"That is going to be a really tough game," said Berdych. "Maybe this time only the ranking position makes me the favourite, but the way he played in the last couple of weeks, that's really good. He’s been playing really well. He can do a lot of damage. I have never played him on grass. We'll see. I'm really looking forward to that. I have one more day off to get some more rhythm on the grass and some energy back."
Eighth seed Milos Raonic reached the last eight of a grass-court event for the first time when he beat Tobias Kamke 7-6(2), 6-3 in 72 minutes. It was his 25th win of the year. The World No. 28 won 49 of 56 points on serve and hit 14 aces.
"I’m very happy how things are going and I’m very happy that I’m playing so well on something that’s a completely new experience for me, playing on grass, especially at this level," said the 20-year-old Canadian. "Everything is very positive and it gives me a lot of confidence and a lot to look forward to."
German Philipp Petzschner also advanced to the quarter-finals, converting four of seven break points in a 6-2, 6-4 win over Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Petzschner, the reigning Wimbledon doubles champion (w/Melzer), reached the Halle semi-finals last year (l. to Federer).
He anticipated a different match against his next opponent, Raonic. "Today he tried to build up the points and Raonic tries to keep them short," Petzschner assessed. "He served really well, as far as I could see. I have to see if there are corners he prefers to serve to. Such things have helped me before this year. I hope I will manage to do that. I think he will find it hard to break me, I feel really well during my serves. It will be an open match."

Dobry mecz Roda.

Matkowski z Marachem wygrali swoje pierwsze spotkanie w QC.
Idę oblukam trochę spotkanie Pięknego z Byczkiem.

JMDP złamany na wstępie 2-go seta. Pachnie niespodzianką.

Mannarino wygrywa 7-6 7-6.

Widziałem dzisiaj w obszernych fragmentach Roda i wyglądało to całkiem spoko. Na początku kiedy Andersonowi siedział serwis były problemy, później po profesorsku go wypunktował. Tymczasem Nadal mając wygranego seta i przewagę breaka, przegrywa niespodziewanie seta. C'mon Radek!

Lepiej, z 5-2 na 5-7!
Chyba postanowił oddać naturze to, co mu podarował w identycznym stylu Federer
