Sneak Peek: Previewing Men's 2011 Australian Open Outfits

Rafael Nadal’s flame-throwing forehand won’t be the only sign of combustion at next month’s Australian Open. The world No. 1 will be fashionably ‘on fire’ when he seeks to complete the “Rafa Slam” in Melbourne.
Nike has provided TENNIS.com with a sneak peek of the new clothes and shoes it has in store for its top players—and eventually you—in 2011. Today, we look at what Nadal, Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro will wear Down Under. Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at what Nike has designed for the ladies—Maria Sharapova, Li Na and five-time champion Serena Williams, whose lingering foot injury will prevent her from defending her title. Next week, we’ll share some the shoes they’ll be seen in.
More information on price points and retail release dates will be available on Nike.com next month.

Look for fervor in his play and fire on his back when Nadal takes the court in Melbourne with the vibrant red “Fearless Rafa Fuego V-neck” and light gray “Fearless Woven Short.” Both are constructed with Nike’s moisture-wicking Dri-FIT fabric for cooling and comfort.
“The mesh fabric promotes breathability, creates comfort and pushes moisture out to the face of the fabric,” says Janice Lucena, creative director of Nike Tennis.
Though he was wearing all black when he won the U.S. Open to complete the career Grand Slam, Nadal has been partial to bright colors in the past. He wore a distinctive orange sleeveless shirt when he reached his first Masters final in Miami, in 2005, and has worn lime green and hot pink shirts in the past. A closer look at this shirt reveals a swooping flame graphic that begins on Nadal’s back and wraps around to his left arm—the one that has tormented so many of his opponents. It’s a fitting symbol, considering the blazing heat of Australia in January.

Working with coach Paul Annacone, Roger Federer revisited his attacking roots in claiming his fifth career season-ending championship with a three-set victory over Nadal in last month London. A rematch is certainly possible in Australia, and both men have distinguishing aspects of their apparel. The reigning Aussie Open champ collaborated with Nike to streamline his style while honoring his heritage in the “Trophy Polo Shirt,” white with yellow accents, and woven shorts.
Federer often dresses down his opponents; he’s also done something like that to his shirt, eliminating both buttons from the placket—which prevents chafing against the skin—and much of the stitching from the back. It’s a continuation of the trend toward a slimmer, slicker, more tailored fit Federer adopted a few years ago. This time, Nike went a step further.
“Traditionally, Roger has had the longer-length placket, but this season we took the buttons off and created a bit more fun and younger silhouette,” says Lucena.
The Roger-centric touches don’t stop there. The placket retains the distinctive “RF” monogram logo, set in yellow, to complete the color featured on the inside of the collar and shoulder piping. And the back of the shirt is detailed with a “Swiss cross perforated pattern” that pays tribute to Federer’s Swiss roots. The yellow accents and gray-green shorts pay homage to Australia’s national colors.
“For me, it’s important that a fan can buy something that is related to me,” said Federer in a past interview. “Like in soccer, you buy a shirt and it’s got somebody’s name on the back. That’s kind of a cool thing.”

Arguably the hardest hitter on the ATP tour, Juan Martin del Potro can blister the ball with such force you almost expect him to leave bruise marks on it. Nadal and Federer saw that first hand when del Potro beat them both, back to back, to win the 2009 U.S. Open title. Del Potro did that in the sleeveless-shirt look that he’s long favored, but he’ll put the sleeves back on in Australia.
The Argentine will wear the blue “Showdown” shirt and black woven short when he contests his first major since losing to Marin Cilic in the fourth round of the Australian Open a year ago. The blue V-neck shirt with white trim along the front shoulder recalls Argentina’s national colors. The shirt, like Federer’s, is constructed with Dri-FIT fabric with mesh panels that promote both breathability and comfort. Mesh panels are also woven into the sides of the short for ventilation and lightness.
